CarPlay audio stopped working after iOS 17.1.1 update

Carplay audio was working fine until I installed update 17.1.1, then it stopped working. CarPlay works fine, so the regular checks and fixes to restore CarPlay are irrelevant. It's just the audio that's stopped. Anyone else encounter this problem?

iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 17

I have the same issue after updating to 17.1.1 . I first thought that it was due to a certain app which triggered this, but that was not the case (in my situation).

The strange thing I experience, is that it looks like that the audio is put into a different mode in the car (e.g. something like speech mode) and doesn't turn back to regular audio mode. Even the radio sound does not work in my case. After many attempts (rebooting, connect, disconnect, etc), I found the following worked in my case:

When the audio is in silent mode, try to make a voice call to e.g. your voicemail box and hang-up. In my case this sets the audio in the right mode again and it all works. I have turned off all apps that could trigger going back to the silent mode, so this is not a long term solution, but for me it works for now.

Hope this helps anyone and hopefully Apple finds a fix for the issue!

After "9" hours, on separate days for the last "2" weeks, on the phone with "Verizon" (isn't our side) and "Apple", (It's on Verizon's Side) finally an "Apple" Elevated Tech found the simple fix. Settings>General>Transfer and Reset iPhone>Reset>Reset All Settings.....you'll need to reset a few things like Alarms, Ring Tones, Notifications and some Face Logins.....But it fixed it after 2 weeks of torture.

Had the same issue today. Tried to forget my car on my device and set up CarPlay using the voice button but still failed. It tells me it’s connected but connection not setup in the end. After performing factory reset on the infotainment system, IT WORKED. Connection can be attempted again as per normal. Hope this helps. This issue was really frustrating during my morning drive to work.

I figured out a solve for this! I drive a new Ford Bronco and this has been working after I spent hours trying to find a fix when the music stops working:

go under ford settings on your screen, phone list, select music icon. go back to audio, click sources, and select your iphone. music should start playing, and once it does, then go back under phone list, click carplay then it should work.

might not work for everyone but did work for me so figured I’d share!

Reset your network. The solution that worked for a close friend of mine. with their iPhone 15 running on the latest iOS 17.

Here is how to do so:

  1. Open Settings and tap on General
  2. Scroll down and select Transfer or Reset iPhoneat the very bottom of the list.
  3. From the two options, choose Reset
  4. Now, you'll have five options. To reset your iPhone's network settings, select Reset Network Settings
  5. Enter your iPhone's passcode to finish the job. All your network settings will be reset as soon as you enter your passcode.

I fixed the issue that my car radio couldn’t play when I had CarPlay open on my car screen. Go to Settings on car screen in CarPlay. Go to Driving Focus—>Activate with CarPlay. It is so bloody annoying that my previous settings don’t get transferred on with each update.

Thankfully now my car radio can still play in the background while I use CarPlay for navigation or messenging. Cmon Apple. This should not be so hard!!

I got it working again. An Apple tech said to check the microphone icon on the CarPlay screen. But I couldn’t find that icon. Finally after tapping on all the icons I could see on the screen and going back to the beginning the microphone icon appeared, and it was muted. I unmuted and all is well. But I haven’t been able to find the microphone icon again. It’s disappeared.
