CarPlay audio stopped working after iOS 17.1.1 update

Carplay audio was working fine until I installed update 17.1.1, then it stopped working. CarPlay works fine, so the regular checks and fixes to restore CarPlay are irrelevant. It's just the audio that's stopped. Anyone else encounter this problem?

iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 17

I have the same issue after updating to 17.1.1 . I first thought that it was due to a certain app which triggered this, but that was not the case (in my situation).

The strange thing I experience, is that it looks like that the audio is put into a different mode in the car (e.g. something like speech mode) and doesn't turn back to regular audio mode. Even the radio sound does not work in my case. After many attempts (rebooting, connect, disconnect, etc), I found the following worked in my case:

When the audio is in silent mode, try to make a voice call to e.g. your voicemail box and hang-up. In my case this sets the audio in the right mode again and it all works. I have turned off all apps that could trigger going back to the silent mode, so this is not a long term solution, but for me it works for now.

Hope this helps anyone and hopefully Apple finds a fix for the issue!

After at least a year of not getting audio from Apple Maps, I took extra time to step through this problem and it is finally solved. I can't say this was related to the latest software update by Apple, but this was some thing I have been chasing down for a very long time. Here is what worked:

For Apple Maps guidance voice audio volume:

Go to vehicle CONNECTED DEVICES. Select APPLE CARPLAY. Scroll up to reveal the NAVIGATION volume slider. Mine was set to zero. I turned it up to 18 (I may adjust it further). This has allowed me to hear navigation from Apple CarPlay, at long last.

Hi, in my case it was iOS 17.1.2 which killed the audio. Everything else works well, including audio streaming. Siri and phone calls do not work through carplay. Phone calls connect, but there is no audio, unless the phone speaker is selected. Siri appears to work, but there is no accompanying audio. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max. My wife has an iPhone 13 Pro and it works fine on 17.1.2. Android devices work well with my car, a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander. Apple Support has thus far not found a fix. I have tried an iTunes reset, a phone reset and restore, without success. It seems to be an iOS glitch on my phone.

Husband and son's phones are at 17.1.1 and mine is still at 17.0.3 for some reason. Neither of theirs will connect to the car (Grand Cherokee Trailhawk hybrid) any more, but mine still will. They also tried theirs in my car (Grand Cherokee again, but not the hybrid), and same issue - neither of theirs will work, but mine will. No issues with either of their phones before the update. Needless to say, I've turned off automatic updates right now...

I have a 2023 Lexus NX350 and the same thing is happening for me after my phone updated to 17.1.2. I have confirmed that the issue is with Siri, not the car. When I press for Siri on the steering wheel she starts talking and then seems to short circuit. Major processing issues across Messages, Maps, Music, but doexn't seem to effect the calling mechanism. If I say "Call Home", she immediately responds "Calling Home, Other" without trouble.

I fixed it once by uninstalling and reinstalling several times, but the next day we had the same problem. It's become a saftety issue now because I've used it so much during the six months I've had the car. Even called the dealership who said they had been inundated with calls about this.

I keep checking for Updates because I have to believe there is a fix coming as it seems to be a pretty wide problem.

i had this issue after updating 17.1.1 today.

They gave me this solution:

Start your car, then https://support.apple.com/kb/HT204389.

press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel. Make sure that your stereo is in wireless or Bluetooth mode. Then on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on. Then, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and select your car. Check your car manual for more information.

but as soon as i tried going in my car to check it and i see it was working fine as before.. without doing anything.

Same problem. 2019 Toyota Corolla.

CarPlay works until I activate Siri; then the audio drops entirely. The music continues to show as "playing" on screen, but there is no sound. So, CarPlay is still active, but without any sound. I can't read/reply to messages, or answer phone calls or speak to Siri. So, seems it is related to the microphone in some way.

Few notes:

CarPlay is only available through cable connection in my car. If I unplug and replug my phone in (USB-C, iPhone 15 Pro, 17.1.1), I have audio again - until I try Siri, then nothing.

I have tried 2 different cables, including one with a data transfer of up to 5gbps, so, it surely can't be that.
