Mac (version sonoma 14.1.1) gave me wrong date and time when setting it to automatic

Of course after trying everything suggested on the internet, nothing worked. Until I've tried this (credits to apple support team):

  1. open terminal
  2. type in this command: sudo rm /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist
  3. press return. you'll get that you have to enter your password.
  4. enter password (note that the password will not be showing on the screen while typing).
  5. then try going back to settings and set the date and time to automatic. it should work.

note that if it didn't work and you got a message on the terminal "command not found" or some kind of error then boot your mac in safe mode and then repeat all of the above steps in safe mode. then restart your mac to normal mode.

hope it works. it worked on my mac.

if all of the above didn't work, try contacting apple support.

Thank you for the inspiration! It worked for me with some minor adjustments. If you encounter an error like "no such file or directory" or similar, as I did, there's no need to boot your Mac into safe mode. Simply enter superuser mode by running the following command:

sudo su

Enter your password and then run command that @AymanDemachkie specified:

rm /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist

Restart your mac and apply Automatic date and time again and enjoy the real time :)

I had this problem, and nothing seemed to work. Using the terminal would just fix it for a few minutes. The solution was to install the last update to 14.3. The trick was installation was nos progressing and stuck on 5 minutes. To finally solve it I had to log-in in safe mode and then install the update. Now the clock is working.

Remember that Apple Silicon devices changed the way you get in safe mode. You have to hold the power button until you see the boot options, and then select the HD while pressing shift. Good luck!

Thank you so much..I was almost convinced that some battery in the board has died.

my setting was anyways Automatic sync setting so i did the below

Set time and date automatically - off

Set time zone automatically using your current location - off

Open terminal - run "sudo rm /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist"

Enter password

Change the settings of Set time and date automatically & Set time zone automatically using your current location to on

Reboot the system

this is working for me, but Apple have to do some thing in coming update.

  1. set the date and time to manual.
  2. open terminal.
  3. type in this command: sudo rm /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist
  4. press return. you'll get that you have to enter your password.
  5. enter password (note that the password will not be showing on the screen while typing).
  6. reboot
  7. then try going back to settings and set the date and time to automatic. it should work.

None of these worked for me. I couldn't change the Timezone. This worked https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/117994/is-there-a-fast-way-to-switch-system-time-zone-from-the-command-line#117995

Type this in the terminal to confirm the right timezone

sudo systemsetup -listtimezones

Then type

sudo systemsetup -settimezone Pacific/Auckland

I did get the following error but it still worked

2024-01-12 02:21:13.494 systemsetup[1518:15883] ### Error:-99 File:/AppleInternal/Library/BuildRoots/0032d1ee-80fd-11ee-8227-6aecfccc70fe/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/Admin/InternetServices.m Line:379

Set TimeZone: Pacific/Auckland

Now I can safely set the following
