How long will my Mac book air be supported?

Your mac book should still be suported by apple until at least 2024 and relevant until 2027.

This was a message sent to me from the computer store that is replacing the battery in my MacBook Air. Does this mean no new Operating system updates for my Mac after 2027? If not what does it mean?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.6

If your MacBook Air is a 2017 model year (from Apple menu > About this Mac) then macOS 12.7.1 is the latest update. That was a security update that was released in October 2023. macOS versions older than Monterey did not receive that update so it is possible that was the last update for your MacBook Air although it is also possible there may be more security updates.

macOS 12 Monterey is the last major macOS version for a 2017 MacBook Air. macOS 13 Ventura requires a 2018 model.

It will probably still get another year of security fixes, maybe 2, no way to be 100% sure.

After that, the relevance will depend on your usage. By 2026 or so., it will be 9 years old, more or less. So considering a newer model would not be out of the question.

Hard to say, since we have no idea what the computer store specifically means by "supported".

Also, its impossible to know when Apple will stop providing a particular model of Mac with macOS updates.

In general its around 5 to 7 years of main macOS updates (but there's cases where they have supported some models for longer), plus 2 more or so of security fixes. After that, it depends entirely on how you use it and whether the apps you use can continue to run on it when no more macOS updates are made available for it by Apple.

What model of MacBook Air do you have exactly?

13" MacBook Air purchased new 2017. OS 12.6.8. I got a message that the battery may need to be replaced...I have to charge often. This would be my second battery in this MacBook. I use it a lot for work...what I posted was what he mentioned to me when we were discussing the new battery installation. I thought the remarks meant that I could expect updates until then end of 2026 or early 2027, but honestly it was a guess on my part.
