"Move to Predicted Mailbox" is grayed out. Help!

When I wanted to move an email to its folder, (e.g., a Message from "Janice" to the "Janice" folder in the sidebar) I just clicked on Messages and a drop down menu showed a bunch of things including "Janice." I just clicked on that and the email went into the Janice folder.

A couple of days ago, it stopped working. Now I see a "Move to Predicted Mailbox" choice that is grayed out. Now I have to drag "Janice" to her folder in the sidebar, and this is a lot more work because my sidebar has so many folders. It involves a lot of scrolling.

Is there way to get this feature back?

Count me in. Very frustrating.

I've been using a Mac for 20 years. Seems like they are getting buggier and buggier. If I tried to get a solution to every issue I'd be on the phone with Apple all of my waking hours.

I have never understood how this feature works. There is no way to edit it or tell it a new folder to start sending mail to. Last year it was six months before it finally figured out I wanted to move bills into a 2023 folder instead of the old 2022 folder.

I recently migrated all of my mail by exporting and importing the mailboxes to a new Mac running Sonoma and somehow these predictive folders transferred with it. I have no idea how it did that. Apple really needs to add a way to edit this.

Like others reporting here, this box just suddenly became grayed out for me. Since I can't edit it, I have no idea what to do about it. As suggested, I tried deleting it from the toolbar, quitting Mail, then restarting Mail and adding it back, but that did not solve the problem. Sonoma did patch recently, but I think it was working after that.

Apple, please make this feature more accessible!

Mine suddenly started working again. I was clicking on a mail then expanding the folder list on the left (I have my mail set up with the folder list on the left and then a list of messages then the message body on the right), when Move To suddenly lit up then started showing folders.

Hopefully it will start working for you soon.

Having the same problem with grayed-out "Move To..." toolbar item on either the mail message window or the mailbox window. May be coincident with upgrading from Monterey 12.7.2 to Sonoma 14.3.1 on a M1 Max Mac Studio. The "Move" tool still works, not the predictive "Move To" tool. Minor inconvenience sine the "Move" tool is still predictive, but would like the more visible "Move to" tool back. Nothing I do makes the "Move To" tool work.

Well, interesting thing just happened. I'll share it here in case it might help someone else. Right after I posted here that I was also having the issue, I logged into my iCloud account online. I used the "move to" function and moved a few emails to their respective box. Then I went back to the mail app on my MacBook and the "move to" folder was no longer grayed out. Hurray!

It's interesting that you say this, I recently deduced that this information may indeed be stored as part of iCloud. I recently upgraded to an M3 Pro Max and moved all my emails by exporting and importing each mailbox separately and found that the move to folder destinations came with them. It's either part of the iCloud or part of the mailbox itself, but I think I can't figure out how to edit that metadata.

While I see the grayed out issue come and go, one thing that is consistent is finding it near impossible to get it to change or update what mailbox I want to move to. It wants to move things to 2023 mailboxes and that will persist until August. I really wish that was easier to change.
