QuickTime Player crashes my MacBook Pro M1 2020 Sonoma 14.1.1

Hi, QuickTime Player crashed my computer under Sonoma 14.0. Today I upgraded to Sonoma 14.1.1. But QuickTime Player still crashes my MacBook Pro M1 2020 when I watch a 30 seconds 4K Apple Video, shot by an iPhone 14 Pro. I can watch the video, but at the end of it, my computer is frozen, and I have to shut it down by pressing the on/off button down during ten seconds. Is there something I missed ?

Thanks

my experience:

mirror screen to a hardwired monitor

use the screenshot tool to take a screen recording

open the resulting screen recording

try pausing/unpausing, clicking anywhere outside the video, seeking, etc, this should be enough to lock up the entire machine in my experience

what’s interesting is it doesn’t truly lock up, but rather responds every roughly 5 seconds. Due to this I’ve been able to close QuickTime, however my machine is still locked up until I restart (or it restarts itself)

Freezing the computer is one thing but crashing is a very different issue.

As you have stated, you had to Force Shutdown the computer.

This is not a Crash per se but a purposeful action ( good one mind you ) to escape this unexpected Freezing

Suggest following a previous posting and post the Full Report of Etrecheck application

Hi,

There are few stuffs on my computer because I only use it to make family videos using films of my grand children that I take with my IPhone. Before upgrading to Sonoma everything was OK.

I don't use Cyberghost very often on my computer, but I need it a lot on my iPad, as I live in Absurdistan (which was called France a long time ago), and rumble.com, RussiaToday.com and others are forbidden here. I don't eat west propaganda so I want to taste east propaganda.

The issue appears on each video I tried to screen on my computer, but I only get iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 shot videos. I can't test with other video because I haven't any. I will try to download one from the net, but I don't know where I can find one.

I'm a bit scary to destroy my computer with "high use of processor" that can generate high temperature.

I don't know what is the Safe Mode. Is it on Mac OS or on QuickTime Player.

I have had other issues since the upgrading to Sonoma, when I load my videos from my iPhone to my Macbook with a USB wire, using File Transfert, after several loads the transfert stops and the software disconnects my iPhone from the Finder window. If I try to unplug an replug, my iPhone is not available in the Finder window. Shutting down File Transfert and reopening it doesn't change anything. So I load my videos with airdrop but it is longer and need more checks.

I think I will try to contact APPLE. I thought I was not alone to have this kind of issue because I read users who gets similar issues on QuickTime after the upgrade of Ventura to Sonoma.

Thanks

Hi, first thanks for your help.

I tested an iPhone 13 video 1280*720 and as soon as I moved the cursor out of the frame of QuickTime Player during the watch, image is freezing but audio still runs, and my computer does not respond anymore. When I wait for around a minute the computer reboot alone like a grown up.

I didn't know what Etrecheck was, so I downloaded it and tried it.

Unfortunately my version is a French language one... yes I know, I should have post on the french spoken community, but when I look for fixes, they are most of all on the english spoken community.

So I launched Etrecheck before testing the issue, and it didn't find any major issue. It found some minor issues, Time Machine Save was not in use, OpenOffice.app 4.1.9 has no signature, Etrecheck not launched from an administrator user so file Files/Library/logs/DiagnosticReports can't be reached. I can send it but in french it could be harder.

I am going to launch Etrecheck from an administrator user to see if much may appear.

Thanks.

Hi,

Unfortunatly, Mac OS 14.2.1 didn't fix my issue.

I watched correctly three videos and the fourth one locked my computer, as usual the keyboard and the keypad don't respond, the video is frozen, but the sound is still there like everything was all right.

I forgot to talk about the tests I made with my adapter.

I watch my videos, always films shot by an iPhone (14 Pro Max : mine, and 12 Pro Max : my wife's one) in APPLE 4K 24 ips (alternative current frequency is 50 Hz here but I don't know if it is still on purpose).

When the monitor is in use I have, sooner or later, an issue.

When I switch the monitor off, and the monitor is plugged in the adapter, an issue occurs too.

When I unplug the monitor from the adapter, everything is OK.

When I unplug the adapter, everything is ok.

According to these tests I consider my adapter as not guilty.

Thanks

After some testing and research, throughout the crashes, my M1 MacBook Air was attached to an external monitor in mirrored mode. When changing this mode to extended, it has been a week now using Quicktime exclusively for video playback without crashes. If this is the case for you and others, then the bug could be narrowed down to how Sonoma and QuickTime handles external displays while in mirrored mode. If you are using your display in mirrored mode please switch to extended mode and let us know if you see any more crashes.

I have had exactly the same problem since upgrading to Sonoma. It is a total pain in the ***. I have to use VLC player now to view quicktime files. I hate it. It gets formats screwed up. From a quick look through this thread, it appears that some kind of conflict with an external monitor is the culprit? I love my widescreen monitor. I can't do my video editing work on a tiny laptop screen. Thanks a bunch Apple. Way back in the day, Apple computers never crashed or froze up. Ever. If a particular app stopped working, that did not stop the entire show. Now it's an everyday occurrence. Bah.

Safe Mode only loads the essential system software and also does extra testing and clearing of system caches.

It can be useful to determine if the crash is or is not due to third party software.

If the problem disappears when running in Safe Mode, you will know it's third party problem.

If the problem keeps occurring even in Safe Mode, then it is a system thing.

To start an M1 mac in Safe Mode:

  • shut down
  • press and hold the power button until a screen with options appear
  • hold the Shift key and from the Options choose Safe Mode

Safe Mode is slower and is only meant as a test.

After testing, just restart your mac normally.

Hi,

I launched QuickTime Player from my standard user on my Mac, so Etrecheck was not able to access Logs Library. I logged in on my administrator user, and I found that the computer have had a Kernel Panic where the report was sent to APPLE.

I launched Etrecheck on my administrator user and at the end of the report (in french) two Kernel Panic are listed.

beginning of excerpt : "

But it only tells me that when I use QuickTime Player I have Kernel Panic but doesn't explain why.

Etrecheck doesn't give me more information about the issue.

I have got that on APPLE report :

So it appears that when I force shutdown the computer no Kernel Panic occurs, but when I let it shutdown alone a Kernel Panic occurs.

Thanks

Thank you for posting the report.

There does not seem to be much installed. The only thing that stands out is this:

Éléments Ouverture:

[En marche] CyberGhost VPN (Cyberghost SRL - installé 2023-06-02) Application

/Applications/CyberGhost VPN.app

While it may not have to do with the present problem, vpn applications used in general, and not for the specific task of connecting to a specific work or school network, in fact reduce your safety.

(see Public VPN are anything but private )

A few more things:

a) does it happen with one specific video, with all similar videos from the same phone, or also with other videos?

b) does it happen also in Safe Mode?
