QuickTime Player crashes my MacBook Pro M1 2020 Sonoma 14.1.1

Hi, QuickTime Player crashed my computer under Sonoma 14.0. Today I upgraded to Sonoma 14.1.1. But QuickTime Player still crashes my MacBook Pro M1 2020 when I watch a 30 seconds 4K Apple Video, shot by an iPhone 14 Pro. I can watch the video, but at the end of it, my computer is frozen, and I have to shut it down by pressing the on/off button down during ten seconds. Is there something I missed ?

Thanks

my experience:

mirror screen to a hardwired monitor

use the screenshot tool to take a screen recording

open the resulting screen recording

try pausing/unpausing, clicking anywhere outside the video, seeking, etc, this should be enough to lock up the entire machine in my experience

what’s interesting is it doesn’t truly lock up, but rather responds every roughly 5 seconds. Due to this I’ve been able to close QuickTime, however my machine is still locked up until I restart (or it restarts itself)

Hi,

I made several tests.

I checked my videos (first one 1280*720, second one 1920*1980 and third one 3840*2160). I can screen the three in my finder window and in iMovie. I downloaded VLC software and I can screen the three videos. So I consider that my videos are correct.

I removed Cyberghost VPN from the starting softwares on my two users (Standard and administrator ones).

I tried to see my processor activity during the QuickTime screening, but when the computer freezes, Activity Monitor freezes too.

I started my computer in safe mode, I checked I was really in safe mode, but moving rapidly several times the cursor on and off the window, I succeeded in freezing my computer.

I am going to try P. Philipps idea.

Thanks

Hi,

Issue is not an issue anymore.

I tried your idea and it was a pretty good one.

I unplugged my External Display and launched my computer in safe mode.

I tested the three videos twice with speed from 2 to 10 times forward and backward, and I got no issue.

I plugged my External Display in safe mode, same tests same result everything is fine.

I unplugged my External Display and launched my computer in normal mode, same tests same result everything is fine.

I plugged my External display in normal mode, same tests but for the third video at the second screening my computer froze.

I unplugged External display in normal mode, same tests plus four screenings for the third video, everything is fine.

So I consider the problem solved and thanks to you two.

It's a shame for my screen, I need it and I don't know how I will cope without, but it's a relief that my computer is still working.

Thanks to you two for your time, your availability, and your efficiency.

Hi,

I stopped using QuickTime Player waiting for an exchange with my second external monitor, a IIYAMA, that I borrowed to my daughter, but I need to pick it up.

However, according to your post, it seems that my problem may not be surely fixed, it worked but I can't be sure it will always work with an external monitor.

I don't watch any web TV neither on app nor on web browser, I don't watch Youtube or other stuff like this on my computer, so I can't tell you.

But I will make tests with this monitor watching my own APPLE 4K films, created from iPhone 14 videos, with iMovie exporting it as high quality level (5 mn video weights almost 17 Go).

Thanks.

Hi,

I've got back my old IIYAMA ProLine (best definition 1920*1080), so I made some tests.

First, I used a RS-232 cable to connect the IIYAMA monitor to the MacBook Pro M1, and just by watching the first APPLE 4K film shot by my iPhone 14, the computer locked before the end of the 30 seconds video.

Second, after restarting the computer, I used a HDMI cable to connect the IIYAMA monitor to the MacBook Pro M1, and just watching another APPLE 4K film shot by My iPhone, the computer locked few seconds after the launch.

The IIYAMA monitor makes poorer results than the PHILIPS (best definition 1920*1200 and only RS-232 plug available).

For the system parameters, I use the monitor as a copy of the Macbook and as a main screen optimized by the computer.

I need to add that before the upgrade to Sonoma, every video shot with my several iPhones (5, 6+, 7+, X, 12 and 14) was watched successfully on my MacBook Pro M1.

I changed my old 2012 MacBook Pro to the MackBook Pro M1 in 2020, because the old one was not enough powerful to display films shot by the iPhone 12 Pro Max in APPLE 4K format.

I can't afford to buy an APPLE Studio Display, and I wonder what kind of monitor I need to buy, to be sure that my films shot by iPhone, will be able to be watched on my computer.

Thanks

Wow... where did this come from? RS-232? Really? Do you know that this was a serial connection standard used by pc in the 1980's?

The original Macintosh in 1984 used RS-422 instead (a similar but not 100% compatible serial connection).

Have you updated to 14.2.1? It is supposed to fix a few bugs. While I have not experienced this issue, with either version of macOS, maybe it will help.

Hi,

Sure, I know RS-232 since a long time ago, around 1986.

I worked on Intel 8088, then 8086, 80286, 80386 SX then DX, 80486 and Pentium, with MS-DOS and DR-DOS, then Windows.

I switched on APPLE with the iMac G3, not for its design, but for its benchmark compared to Intel processors.

I told you that my screens were old, the IIYAMA has two plugs (HDMI and RS-232) and the PHILIPS has two plugs too (DVI and RS-232).

But I didn't update to 14.2.1, so it's a very good point, and I'm going to do it right now.

Thanks

Hi,

The adapter I use to connect my Mac is a UGREEN USB-C Multifunction Adapter (RJ45, VGA, HDMI, USB 3.0 * 3, Jack 3,5, Micro-SD, SD and USB-C), but I'm not found of it. When I plug my three USB external Hard Drive at the same time, everything is OK, but when I unplug one of them and I plug another one, one of the two others unmounts itself telling me that it has been abnormally unplugged. I can suppose a lot of stuffs but I'm not sure of any of these.

I will come back when I have tested new videos.

Thanks

I have the same issue on an M1 MacBook Air running the latest macOS Sonoma, connected to external Samsung monitor. When opening "some" video files with QuickTime it will cause the entire operating system to freeze, this is a serious freeze as the entire OS becomes unresponsive. At this point the machine must be forcibly shut down by holding down the power key.

Seeing that a Live Wallpaper is essentially a video file being played back, my intuition is telling me that the Live Wallpapers feature introduced in Sonoma is the cause of the issue. I recently disabled Live Wallpapers & Screensavers, setting my wallpaper to a still image and using a screensaver that was included in previous macOS versions. After doing these things, I have not seen the issue re-appear, yet. Can you try doing the same and let us know if the issue occurs again?

Hi,

When I read your post I thought my issue was fixed but...

Here is what I did.

In <System Settings> <Wallpaper> I chose a still picture <Hello green metallic> and switched off <Display on all spaces>.

In <System Settings> <Screen Saver> I chose picture of MacOS Monterey and switch of <Display on all spaces>.

I shut down and restarted the computer, then I watched my 30 seconds videos.

I could watch nine of them but the tenth didn't make it and froze.

It was a little bit better, but unfortunately it didn't fix my issue.

I keep my settings as they are now and wait for another idea.

Thanks

Hi,

Great idea. I should have think of it before.

I begun by setting my Wallpaper and my screensaver on, as they were before your last post, because Coal Mine Canyon in AZ was too wonderful to replace it by a single picture.

I tested setting on external monitor as extended, and watched thirty videos without any issue. It is not the best option for me because my eyes are not as powerful as they were, and it's a bit odd to find and follow the cursor on my 13" screen.

I tested setting on external monitor as used as the main screen, and watched the same thirty videos without any issue. And the option seems to be better than the previous one.

So I can say that no issue occurred during my tests, that doesn't mean that everything is OK, but I cross my fingers, arms and legs... and will come back to the thread in case of any problem.

Thanks a lot for your help and for everyone on this thread.

I hope that APPLE engineers will begin to investigate, because mirrored screen was the best option for me.

Thanks

I'm having the same issues when using Quicktime to play back videos where the play back tends to freeze, which then causes the computer to freeze as well. I also have my Samsung 4K Ultra TV connected via HDMI with mirroring turned on.

I have the 16" 2021 Mocbook Pro M1Max running the current version of Sonoma v14.3.1 so this issue has not been fixed in this version of Sonoma either. However, it seems that "Mirroring" is still causing this issue. When I turn that off, the Quicktime issues go away.
