QuickTime Player crashes my MacBook Pro M1 2020 Sonoma 14.1.1

Hi, QuickTime Player crashed my computer under Sonoma 14.0. Today I upgraded to Sonoma 14.1.1. But QuickTime Player still crashes my MacBook Pro M1 2020 when I watch a 30 seconds 4K Apple Video, shot by an iPhone 14 Pro. I can watch the video, but at the end of it, my computer is frozen, and I have to shut it down by pressing the on/off button down during ten seconds. Is there something I missed ?

Thanks

After some testing and research, throughout the crashes, my M1 MacBook Air was attached to an external monitor in mirrored mode. When changing this mode to extended, it has been a week now using Quicktime exclusively for video playback without crashes. If this is the case for you and others, then the bug could be narrowed down to how Sonoma and QuickTime handles external displays while in mirrored mode. If you are using your display in mirrored mode please switch to extended mode and let us know if you see any more crashes.

Safe Mode only loads the essential system software and also does extra testing and clearing of system caches.

It can be useful to determine if the crash is or is not due to third party software.

If the problem disappears when running in Safe Mode, you will know it's third party problem.

If the problem keeps occurring even in Safe Mode, then it is a system thing.

To start an M1 mac in Safe Mode:

  • shut down
  • press and hold the power button until a screen with options appear
  • hold the Shift key and from the Options choose Safe Mode

Safe Mode is slower and is only meant as a test.

After testing, just restart your mac normally.

I'm having the same issues when using Quicktime to play back videos where the play back tends to freeze, which then causes the computer to freeze as well. I also have my Samsung 4K Ultra TV connected via HDMI with mirroring turned on.

I have the 16" 2021 Mocbook Pro M1Max running the current version of Sonoma v14.3.1 so this issue has not been fixed in this version of Sonoma either. However, it seems that "Mirroring" is still causing this issue. When I turn that off, the Quicktime issues go away.

Hi,

Issue is not an issue anymore.

I tried your idea and it was a pretty good one.

I unplugged my External Display and launched my computer in safe mode.

I tested the three videos twice with speed from 2 to 10 times forward and backward, and I got no issue.

I plugged my External Display in safe mode, same tests same result everything is fine.

I unplugged my External Display and launched my computer in normal mode, same tests same result everything is fine.

I plugged my External display in normal mode, same tests but for the third video at the second screening my computer froze.

I unplugged External display in normal mode, same tests plus four screenings for the third video, everything is fine.

So I consider the problem solved and thanks to you two.

It's a shame for my screen, I need it and I don't know how I will cope without, but it's a relief that my computer is still working.

Thanks to you two for your time, your availability, and your efficiency.

Hi,

I launched QuickTime Player from my standard user on my Mac, so Etrecheck was not able to access Logs Library. I logged in on my administrator user, and I found that the computer have had a Kernel Panic where the report was sent to APPLE.

I launched Etrecheck on my administrator user and at the end of the report (in french) two Kernel Panic are listed.

beginning of excerpt : "

But it only tells me that when I use QuickTime Player I have Kernel Panic but doesn't explain why.

Etrecheck doesn't give me more information about the issue.

I have got that on APPLE report :

Notice that with OS 13 Big Sur I never had any Kernel Panic using QuickTime Player.

I have the same issue on an M1 MacBook Air running the latest macOS Sonoma, connected to external Samsung monitor. When opening "some" video files with QuickTime it will cause the entire operating system to freeze, this is a serious freeze as the entire OS becomes unresponsive. At this point the machine must be forcibly shut down by holding down the power key.

Seeing that a Live Wallpaper is essentially a video file being played back, my intuition is telling me that the Live Wallpapers feature introduced in Sonoma is the cause of the issue. I recently disabled Live Wallpapers & Screensavers, setting my wallpaper to a still image and using a screensaver that was included in previous macOS versions. After doing these things, I have not seen the issue re-appear, yet. Can you try doing the same and let us know if the issue occurs again?

Hi,

When I read your post I thought my issue was fixed but...

Here is what I did.

In <System Settings> <Wallpaper> I chose a still picture <Hello green metallic> and switched off <Display on all spaces>.

In <System Settings> <Screen Saver> I chose picture of MacOS Monterey and switch of <Display on all spaces>.

I shut down and restarted the computer, then I watched my 30 seconds videos.

I could watch nine of them but the tenth didn't make it and froze.

It was a little bit better, but unfortunately it didn't fix my issue.

I keep my settings as they are now and wait for another idea.

Thanks

Jan 19, 2024 8:52 AM in response to alexanderlindo

Hi,

Great idea. I should have think of it before.

I begun by setting my Wallpaper and my screensaver on, as they were before your last post, because Coal Mine Canyon in AZ was too wonderful to replace it by a single picture.

I tested setting on external monitor as extended, and watched thirty videos without any issue. It is not the best option for me because my eyes are not as powerful as they were, and it's a bit odd to find and follow the cursor on my 13" screen.

I tested setting on external monitor as used as the main screen, and watched the same thirty videos without any issue. And the option seems to be better than the previous one.

So I can say that no issue occurred during my tests, that doesn't mean that everything is OK, but I cross my fingers, arms and legs... and will come back to the thread in case of any problem.

Thanks a lot for your help and for everyone on this thread.

I hope that APPLE engineers will begin to investigate, because mirrored screen was the best option for me.

Thanks

Freezing the computer is one thing but crashing is a very different issue.

As you have stated, you had to Force Shutdown the computer.

This is not a Crash per se but a purposeful action ( good one mind you ) to escape this unexpected Freezing

Suggest following a previous posting and post the Full Report of Etrecheck application

So it appears that when I force shutdown the computer no Kernel Panic occurs, but when I let it shutdown alone a Kernel Panic occurs.

Thanks

Thank you for posting the report.

There does not seem to be much installed. The only thing that stands out is this:

Éléments Ouverture:

[En marche] CyberGhost VPN (Cyberghost SRL - installé 2023-06-02) Application

/Applications/CyberGhost VPN.app

While it may not have to do with the present problem, vpn applications used in general, and not for the specific task of connecting to a specific work or school network, in fact reduce your safety.

(see Public VPN are anything but private )

A few more things:

a) does it happen with one specific video, with all similar videos from the same phone, or also with other videos?

b) does it happen also in Safe Mode?

Hi, first thanks for your help.

I tested an iPhone 13 video 1280*720 and as soon as I moved the cursor out of the frame of QuickTime Player during the watch, image is freezing but audio still runs, and my computer does not respond anymore. When I wait for around a minute the computer reboot alone like a grown up.

I didn't know what Etrecheck was, so I downloaded it and tried it.

Unfortunately my version is a French language one... yes I know, I should have post on the french spoken community, but when I look for fixes, they are most of all on the english spoken community.

So I launched Etrecheck before testing the issue, and it didn't find any major issue. It found some minor issues, Time Machine Save was not in use, OpenOffice.app 4.1.9 has no signature, Etrecheck not launched from an administrator user so file Files/Library/logs/DiagnosticReports can't be reached. I can send it but in french it could be harder.

I am going to launch Etrecheck from an administrator user to see if much may appear.

Thanks.
