When near iPhone, Ultra 2 watch cellular only connecting when bluetooth is off

I recently purchased the Ultra 2 watch and was attempting to set up cellular with T-Mobile. To validate the setup, we attempted to send/receive text messages with the watch disconnected from the phone.

iPhone 15 Pro Max:

  • Airplane mode on
  • Wifi off
  • Bluetooth off

The watch will not send/receive messages; however, it would send/receive messages when the watch's bluetooth was turned off or the phone was turned completely off.

Apple support tried to convince me that the watch could not send/receive text messages when the iPhone is in airplane mode... But seeing how I assume that's the purpose of having a cellular plan for the watch, I find this hard to believe.

Is there still some connection between the watch and the phone that would prevent the watch from switching to cellular in this scenario? I don't know if this is a real world issue, but it seems like behavior that should not occur.

So funny that the same thing happened to me. I was on the phone with T-Mobile for hours trying to solve this.

So I believe I was in your shoes, I wanted to put my iPhone on airplane mode with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off so it wouldn’t consume any battery since I was Out on the street. However, the watch cannot get cellular or cellular data at all. It looks like having your phone nearby, jams the Apple one. And I wasn’t happy with it, because ideally I wanted to use my Apple Watch for cellular stuff while my phone was on airplane mode and not consuming battery as much.

Anyway, the way around this is to completely turn off your phone if you’re going to have it with you while you plan to use your Apple ultra watch completely cellular to make calls and browse emails, etc. It is so weird. And of course, leaving your house with your phone off or on and taking the Apple Watch with you will also work as normal with its cellular capabilities. However, I am curious now to try putting my phone on airplane mode with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off, and leaving the house with my ultra watch to see if cellular works. If this is the case, then this confirms that having your watch in proximity to your iPhone will still pair it even if Bluetooth is off on your iPhone.
