Macbook M1 Pro Fans running constantly at near max capacity

I've had this laptop for over a year now with no issues. 64 gb, m1. Absolutely love this laptop.

Now all of a sudden, the fans start to spin at more 4k-5k RPMs (very, very loud). This happens immediately on login, when I have nothing running, etc.

I tried doing a clean install of Mac OS Ventura, Mac OS Sonoma. I have run diagnostics as well, nothing came up. However, I know this isn't normal behavior. I never heard the fans up until a few weeks ago. Even if I quit all my applications, the fans continue to go insane. The noise is so much I have to wear earphones just to focus on my work.

I have two of these laptops, one of them from my work. This is only happening on my personal laptop. So I know for a fact this is very, very not normal.

I'm okay with the fans running if I'm doing some heavy rendering work - but if all I have is a few firefox tabs open? That's unacceptable for such an expensive machine.

I went to the Apple Store twice (I have Apple Care). They're telling me this is normal behavior. I know it is NOT.

I've attached a screenshot of my Activity monitor and Macs Fan Control.

Has anyone run into this issue? How were you able to resolve? Apple Support has been very disappointing.

Wanted to give y'all a quick update - they finally listened to me and they sent it back and had the motherboard replaced.

Haven't heard the fan since I got it back yesterday. Hopefully it stays that way!

Thanks again for all the help, you guys have been great.

Agreed. Very not normal. The Apple Store owes you more than the perfunctory dismissal you received.

Please review About fans and fan noise in your Apple product - Apple Support, and in particular Check for unexpected heavy fan use:

If the fans in your device run fast even when it isn't experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated, follow the steps for your device:

Presumably, you already did those things to no avail.

The temperatures reported by "Macs Fan Control" are normal, but you don't need a clever app to tell you a Mac's fan is objectionably loud. That's the problem you need to address. Apple will not be interested in "Macs Fan Control". For those reasons I encourage you to uninstall it and don't even mention it to Apple. They won't care. They might even accuse you of damaging your Mac by using it. Uninstall it.

I think it's a hardware problem but what I think doesn't matter. Bring it back to Apple.

(you have that display sorted by GPU)

what does that display show when you click on the CPU tab?

--------

Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. it changes NOTHING.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the system ClipBoard, then Pasted into an Additional text window in a reply on the forums.

Use Etrecheck Pro for free

Genius Bar technicians are not trained to do these complex analyses. Your Etrecheck report may be very helpful, and it is really easy to do.

Apple support can refer you to a specialist who can read your Etrecheck report and possibly any crash reports that are stored away. Anything you post here can be read by them (if you provide your Avatar or discussion name and location) EXCEPT: they don't take our conclusions at face value.

In business, when making presentations to an adverse audience, they used to tell me, "Try to present a compact target, since you know they will be throwing spears."

You still have leftovers from BOTH Macs fan control and stat menus:

Hey, I appreciate you looking into this!

I'm not sure what streamingunzipservice is to be honest, I just checked and it's not running now. It might be a service that runs when I charge my phone using my mbp.

I did install iStat for a day just to verify that Mac Fan Control readings were accurate (they were). I've since uninstalled it. I think there are some left over files in the Application Support directory, I can clean those up.

I ran Eltrecheck again, I attached the findings to see if anything jumps out at you.

Thanks again!

Very well. Please let me know what they have to say.

I reiterate the need to uninstall "Macs Fan Control" lest they accuse you of damaging your Mac by using it, and deny service for that reason. I'm serious.

While I'm on the subject they are as likely to accept an EtreCheck report as they would accept a warm jar of spit.

Do not even mention this Discussion.

why is 'streaming unzip service' a substantial component of overall Energy use?
