Preview pdf format not supported

One pdf that I get monthly from a credit card company cannot be opened by Preview or Adobe Acrobat. I see in this community that Preview doesn't support TIFs and other formats but a credit card statement? Any thoughts?

I have Sonoma 14.1.2 on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro

Does that PDF that the credit card company provides end in .zip instead of .pdf — meaning they are shipping it in a compressed zip archive for added security? If so, neither Preview nor Acrobat Reader will open it in that format and it must be unzipped by double-clicking the Zip archive in the Finder, then opening the PDF.

Although there are PDFs that Apple's Preview handles badly or not at all, Adobe Acrobat Reader should handle any well-formed PDF since Adobe does keep that application current to the PDF spec. Ensure that you have the current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (23.008.20423 this morning) via its Help menu : Check for Updates…

Preview not only supports TIFs but also multipage TIFs, and other mainstream image formats — though the Finder's Quick Look will only show the first page of a multipage TIF.

I have opened hundreds of PDFs created by a large spectrum of PDF creation tools in both Preview and Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Adobe product has never failed to open an undamaged PDF document.

Can you request that the credit card company regenerate the monthly statement as a PDF and give that a try? I think you received a damaged PDF when neither PDF application would open it.
