Will there be a journal app on the iPad as there is now on the iPhone?

My iPhone has just been updated and now has the Journal app. My iPad has also been updated to 17.2 but I don’t see the Journal app. I have tried using the iPhone version but I would much rather use the iPad and a keyboard to make notes about my day than the iPhone

Makes me wonder what they were thinking to launch on the iPhone…. A journal app should have launched with the Mac or the iPad devices with a keyboard. They always seem to be one step behind what we want.

The Journal App needs to be release to iPadOS with a feature to handwrite with the Apple Pencil! This is essential for mental health practices.

Why adding the journaling feature to the Journal app on iPadOS?

  • Helps you get stuff off your chest and understand your feelings better.
  • Lets you spot patterns in your thoughts and actions, making you more self-aware.
  • Clears up your emotions, cuts down on stress, and helps you handle tough times.
  • Works like a mini therapy session, letting you explore your thoughts privately.
  • Encourages mindfulness and gratitude by making you think about the good stuff that happened each day.
  • Makes you appreciate the little wins and positive moments in your life.
  • Boosts your problem-solving skills by giving you a space to think through solutions.
  • Builds up your resilience and makes you more optimistic over time.

Honestly, it only makes sense placing the journal app on the iPadOS/MacOS as well. For me, the journal app on iOS is a good idea to for glancing or jotting down something quick. I feel that a lot more people wouldn’t only just use the journal app more if it was on iPadOS/MacOS, but they would likely have more positive reviews. I really hope Apple dives deeper into what the journal app could be. It really has the potential to be an amazing an app.

Please, my revered Apple developers, I beg of you, make the Apple Journal app available on the iPad. It’s my main mode of doing anything digital because it’s 💯 easier for me. With the few remaining years I have left, I would dearly love to be able to use the amazing Journal, but I really can’t on my phone. 🙏❣️

Sincerely,

Carolyn , a devout Apple fan

Day One allows all sorts of media. At the moment, it appears to still be much better than Apple's app. And, according to articles I read, Day One will be incorporating Apple's Journal Suggestions (Apple has made that an option). The other thing I like is that Day One allows you to export your journal as a PDF. So far, I haven't figured out how you can get Apple's Journal entries out of the phone. But, I haven't spent much time looking.

The downside to Day One is that some features require a subscription. On the other hand, it can be accessed from an iPhone, iPad, Mac or any browser.

Have you told Apple how you feel? They don't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You use the feedback link:

Apple has said nothing about plans to add the feature to the iPad. You can let them know it's something you'd like to see here:

Meanwhile, you might want to look at Day One. It's a fantastic journal app.

Most apps are available on all Apple devices, I really wish that the Journal app was able to be used on my iPad and Mac, as they make much more sense for journalling than on a little iPhone with no physical keyboard or stylus abilities. While on the subject, it would also be 10/10 if there was a stylus for the phones... Procreate Pocket doesn't hit the same without it, and neither does note taking. Thank you!

Thanks very much for the helpful feedback. I have left a request under the iPad section. Apple have not listed product feedback for Journal yet. I will take a look at Day One to see how it stacks up against Agenda. I like Agenda for many reasons but what I don’t like about it is it is almost only a text based piece of software. Yes, you can insert photos and other media but they only show as icons. I was really looking forward to having Journal but was disappointed when I discovered it is only for the iPhone. I have an iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and case and I find it much easier to use that rather than the onscreen keyboard of the iPhone.

Yes, I would LOVE the journal app for the iPad, especially with the ability to use the Apple Pencil. I much prefer using paper journals, but am trying to find a low waste alternative. I’ve used the journal app on my phone, but I have an iPhone mini and find typing on it for journaling frustrating. Overall I like the app and I’m looking forward to improvements! Like an iPad app :)

@POMINOZ - How do you have iPad 17.2 when my iPad (air 2) is only 15.8 ???

An iPad Air2 is capable of update to iPadOS 15.8.2; the Air2 does not support iPadOS16 or later.

Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1*, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3* - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8.2

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" first generation) - iPadOS 16.7.8

(*) obsolete

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 17.5.1

  • iPad Pro 13" (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (2nd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation and later + M4)
  • iPad Pro 10.5"
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later + M2)
  • iPad (6th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

If you would like to provide feedback to Apple to suggest this be added you should go here Product Feedback - Apple.

These are user forums for people like yourself to come and assist each other with issues that may be something that can be taken care of without having to work with Customer Service or to wait to bring your device in for repair. Apple does not monitor or read anything in this area and will get the information of what you are looking for in the feedback link.
