Updating iOS via iTunes on Windows 10 using "Download Only"

Note: I am on Windows. Not MacOS.

Since downloading an iOS update can take a while on iTunes, I often will select "Download Only" and come back later to update my iPhone. Silly me, I thought that this would allow me to come back later and update my phone quickly, since the update file had been previously downloaded and would just be waiting for me ready to install.

However, when I come back later, plug in my phone, and select Update, iTunes starts downloading the same file over again, and it takes foooooorrrrrreeeeeevvvvveeeeerrrrrrr.

I would have assumed that iTunes would ask something like "This update file has been previously downloaded. Would you like to install the previously downloaded file?"

But it doesn't ask that. It just starts downloading the update package again from scratch. So my questions are (1) what am I doing wrong? (2) is it possible the "Download Only" button is actually not useful because iTunes doesn't seem to be aware of the file that it has previously downloaded?

Many thanks!

Seriously though, that still doesn't answer my specific questions. There is an option to "download only" for the iOS update on iTunes. The button was placed there by Apple and when you click it, an iOS package downloads. The button is right up there, front and center, right in your face. I am trying to understand how to apply a previously downloaded iOS package.

See https://allthings.how/install-ios-ipsw-firmware-file-itunes-windows-mac/ for details of how to install a specific .ipsw file on your device.

I don't recall a download iOS package option.

The specific version of iOS that you require is dependant upon the model of device that you have. For example, a 6th generation iPod Touch can only currently run iOS 12.5.7, whereas the 7th generation iPod Touch can currently run iOS 15.8. An iPad uses iPadOS rather than iOS.

Oh, and then there's the iPhone.

This means that it would be possible to download the wrong package, so perhaps that's why there is no download only.
