Sonoma Apple Mail new message window will not delete

You can try quitting Mail.app and relaunch it holding down the Shift key

drafts / blank windows /untitled

I would look for an email stuck in the Outbox or Drafts in one of your email accounts.

Remove the unsent email typically fixes the issue.

This can happen for various reason— ex sent email with an attachment too big and gets rejected by the mail server.

Delete the mail from the outbox.

Thank you. That fixed a problem my family was having. Mail in the outbox that was not being delivered for a different reason appears to have been creating these "phantom" new messages. Deleting any mail in outbox and restarting Mail.app did the trick.
