The only way was to switch to kindle and to buy again the book. Kindle has both decent dictionaries and translation capabilities embedded

I read books in Italian, French, Spanish, Swedish, and German all the time and have had no problems with using Apple's bilingual dictionaries to provide English meanings. You access these via the "Look Up" function (not via "Translate"). You need to first check the dictionaries you want in Settings > General > Dictionary.
