What is this? It shows up on the watch every time I wake my phone now.

If you hold your watch at the top of your iPhone it will pick it up as part of the together mode so you can share pictures, contacts etc. If you don’t want it on you can turn it off: go to your phone settings, type in airdrop & it’s within those settings & is called “Bring devices together”where you can turn it off

My concern is that someone tried to pair with my watch while I was out in a public place. Not too happy about my watch somehow connecting with another device without my permission.
That can't happen unless you give specific permission .
If you are still worried turn it off as described in the thread several times.
it is like air play or share or something like that. it shares my info with another apple device, mine or my friends.
I only have one watch…it is a series 7 though. Same thing has been happening on mine.

It is normal, it is Name Drop animation, but if you don't like it, turn it off.
No. I had This happen to my Apple Watch 7 and iPhone 15 and I do NOT have more than one watch. So that absolutely isn’t why
This seems to happen when you bring any two Apple products together, it happens if I touch my phone to my watch. Ive also tested it with my phone against my husbands phone and that works too
