iOS 17.2.1 kills CarPlay

Updated to iOS 17.2.1 on both iPhone 15 Pro (the iPhone) and iPhone 14. Both iPhones when connnected wired or wirelessly (via an ottocast wireless CarPlay adapter) to a Mazda CX-3 cannot activate CarPlay as usual.

Tried restarted the iPhone, renamed the iPhone. Not working.

Took a minute to figure out. Went into settings then CarPlay, removed ALL VEHICLES LISTED, including ones I haven’t used in awhile. Then it connected to my car just fine. Haven’t had an issue after that.

The iPhone 15 Pro is running 17.4.1 now. I took the car back to the dealer and they updated the firmware. CarPlay now works fine. It seems that some iOS updates also need CarPlay update on the car. Very worrying for iOS 18. Apple should inform CarPlay users in advance NOT to update iOS until CarPlay is updated.

I finally solved the problem, thanks to a Facebook Audi e-Tron GT owners group, were many users reportet the same issue:

1

Disconnect the iPhone from the Cars Software, in my case the Audi MMI.

2

Reboot the Cars MMI holding down the button on the center console of the car for 4-5 Seconds

3

Reconnect the iPhone to the Car's WiFi, deactivating the private connection option on the iPhone WiFi Settings

If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is enabled. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car and then tap Forget This Car.

Update: My car is a 2019 VW e-Golf SEL with wired CarPlay. Historically (prior to the 17.2.1 update) CarPlay wouldn't work 5% of the time. I'd plug in my iPhone, CarPlay wouldn't work, but the phone would charge and give me some other indication that it was connected via USB. This was the case for the almost three years I've had the car, using MFI cables and the latest iPhone each year with current iOS updates. CarPlay wouldn't work, but later in the day it would start working again after the car had been off for awhile, but without any further involvement from me. It would just start working as it should.

This new 17.2.1 update was different. No matter what I tried, it wouldn't work with my 15 Pro on 17.2.1. Other iPhones not on 17.2.1 would work immediately.

After deleting my CarPlay profile on my same 15 Pro with 17.2.1 and after a week of testing, I'm happy to report that CarPlay is working again, aside from the very first time I connected after deleting my car's profile from my phone. But, since then, it is working. I know this hasn't been a fix for everyone, but it's worth a try if you haven't done that. Hopefully Apple will recognize this issue and fix it in a future update.

I have an 2020 Acura RDX. If I go into the infotainment settings…connections… CarPlay…. The connected phones come up on a display. For some reason my iPhone showed CarPlay was disabled but the rest of my family’s phones were all still enabled. Which is why mine was the only iPhone not connecting. Very strange since no one had disabled the CarPlay.

WIRED CARPLAY NOT WORKING? HERE’S A POSSIBLE SOLUTION…

Ok folks I’ve been dealing with intermittent (often zero) CarPlay capability since iOS 17 was installed on my IPhone 13. I ordered a wireless CarPlay adapter that plugs into the USB port that you use for wired CarPlay. I figured if it didn’t work I would return it and get my money back so I had nothing to lose in my opinion.

And guess what? CarPlay is working again - there is a little lag time however it was easy to connect and I am just happy to have my CarPlay back until Apple issues a fix (however I may stay just keep my wireless adapter and forget the cord all together). Once the “dongle” is plugged into the USB, you connect to the adapter via WiFi then connect via Bluetooth. CarPlay will then start. It’s that easy! For reference I have a Sony XAV stereo installed on my truck.

I wasn’t happy that I had to buy an adapter but it was worth it to have my CarPlay back.

I posted this earlier, but it is definitely an iOS 17 issue as my daughter has the same phone that I do and she is running iOS 16; she has no issues with CarPlay when she plugs her phone into my stereo. All issues started for me after updating to 17.

I am having the same issue with my 2024 Silverado... If I delete the phone and reconnect, my phone recognizes the device but it won't play anything, like i push ply and it just automatically pauses... if I remove divide and reinstall and then I plug it in it will work wired, and sometimes wirelessly after that for a few times, but then have to do it all over again... half the time that doesn't even work at all... this is ridiculous with a brand new vehicle and brand new phone, but the CarPlay was working just fine before the recent update.
