There are magazines that are included with my subscription, but when a link comes up on Facebook, I am unable to read the article and also apparently unable to sign in with my Apple credentials

I'm not sure where or how you think Facebook is involved in the Apple News+ subscription. Your subscription includes reading anything in the NEWS.app. No matter what you can see in News.app, it has nothing to do with any other site or service. In other words, just because (I'm making up names here for the sake of illustration) you can view a NYT article in Apple News, doesn't mean you have access to the paywall on NYT website.
