iTunes email: Problem with Payment Information

I just got an email titled "There is a problem with your payment information". I can't see anything wrong but my extra iCloud storage will be deleted if I don't correct this unknown problem within about one week. Where can I get help to sort this out? Nothing has changed.

Thanks.

I followed up with Apple Support. It is a sophisticated phishing attempt. @itunes.com looks legit but it isn’t. Anything from Apple has @apple.com in the email address. If you clicked on any of the links I would change your Apple ID password and make sure you have two-factor authentication working. This is probably the most realistic phishing attempt I have seen to date.

I received two emails. I checked my account the first time and all was in order, so I ignored the email. Received a second email today, so I checked again and everything was fine. Just to be safe, I texted with an Apple support person. They said it was probably phishing and I should forward them the email. However, in the process of texting with them and checking my account, all of a sudden I had an error message in red that my card info was expired (it’s not). That error message was not there minutes before that. I deleted the card and added it back in and everything seems to be fine. The support person did not address my questions about why the system was telling me my card was expired when it isn’t. Hoping all is fixed, but there is clearly something going on. Hoping it’s not some sophisticated hack on all of our credit cards and hoping my iCloud payment goes through.

This may be a repeated solution, but adding to provide my experience.

I had this similar email/issue and I was able to fix it by deleting the current card(s) and adding it back in. What I *THINK* happened is that my card information only had a two digit number for the expiration year (24). When I added the card back in with the full year 2024, I no longer had the issue. I could be wrong, but at least deleting and re-adding was a successful workaround. Hope this helps.

I contacted apple about this today - I wasted my entire day trying to figure it out. When I called, they said the email was LEGIT. When I would sign into my account everything was up to date. They said the credit card was going to expire even though it was updated months - if not years - ago. After speaking with someone they assured me that the information had indeed been updated and that there was no further action to be taken. Not sure if there’s a bug in their system or if it is a phishing scam that they’re not acknowledging. Make sure the info is correct in your settings using the steps - not links - and you should be fine. Just thought I’d share so no one else has to waste an entire day on this. 🙂🙃

After two discussions with Apple Support over the last week (they both said it was a phishing email) and hearing of real billing problems with others, I added a secondary credit card just in case. Today I received a iCloud storage receipt but it wasn’t charged to my original card. It was the secondary card that I just added a day ago. So there is a problem with charging the default card even though nothing has changed and it doesn’t expire for a few years. So I texted Support again. They asked me to delete the default card and input it again which I did. This person did not say it was a phishing email this time and confirmed that this is a problem that is currently being looked into. We will see in the days ahead if it’s resolved.

@godmother63 You have misinterpreted the whois database registration record. The comlaude.com references the registrar, not the owner. They are a legitimate registrar. Use lookup.icann.org and you will see the Registrant is Apple, Inc.

The TXT record in itunes.com used to describe email sender signing (SPF) references has largely the same information as the SPF info for apple.com, and is entirely under apple.com control. The email originates from an apple.com server.

Had the same thing happen. Received an email from iTunes to update payment info on December 22, another on December 28 to update charge card. Charge card is updated and accurate. This morning I got an update wheel on iPad settings needed to update payment info for Apple. Charge card does not expired until 2025. Online chat with apple, sent screen shots of emails, told they would elevate up to next level and they would call me. Call came from Apple, screen shared, then told they tried to charge me and it didn’t go through. Told to call my credit card company. I did. They never show a charge being attempted! Apple has a problem! They ended my call with “you will be downsized with iCloud to the next lower level!”

"And there is the phishing link."

Actually, it seems that this was simply an errant email from apple. When you look at the raw source from the email, you can see the actual link, which is legitimate:

----------------------------

" > You can also update your billing information on a Mac or PC =

-----------------------------

So it appears that this message is harmless. It would be nice, though, if apple would admit their mistake.

Not sure about that advice. I received one email, contacted Apple. They told me it was spam. I deleted it and changed my iCloud password. Then I received the email again. I deleted it. Then I received a notification on my phone through the Settings app that I needed to update my payment details. I rang Apple again and they told me again that the emails were spam. They couldn't tell me why I received the notification to update my details. My payment for my iCloud subscription on 29th Dec was declined. The notification remains and I'm currently in arrears. Apple also told me they are aware of the issue. My problem has been escalated and I hope to hear from them in a day or two. My bet is that one of their internal systems has been compromised. I'm reluctant to add a new card and my old card is perfectly fine.

So yes it might be phishing but cards are being refused and iCloud subscriptions are not being paid.
