Face ID not working for app store

Iphone 15 running ios 17.2.1. Face ID is not working in the app store and I have to manually enter my password. I also do not get the "double click" option, but rather, there is an "install button" that I must select. I've toggled app store on and off in the face id section in settings. I've restarted the phone. I've reset the accessibility features for the double click. Still won't work in app store. Face ID appears to be working everywhere else.

My husband just made the switch from Android to iPhone and was having this issue. After following all guidance we found online to make sure everything was turned on or off correctly. What worked was simply opening the App Store, scrolling to the very bottom and signing out. Then signing back in.. as simple as that.

Today out of the blue mine made me log in with my Apple information as well. I did the same thing, logged out and back in and it’s letting me double click to download apps again.

I have been experiencing the same problem. Started happening after I changed my Apple ID from icloud.com to a new email. Face ID works for everything but in app store purchases. I have tried everything. I used to be able to simple double click the side button to confirm free/cost apps from the app store. I'm now forced to manually enter my password each time. I've done a full factory reset and same thing. I've disabled passwords in the app store for now, but I still have to hit the install button.

Same thing is happening to me. Just upgraded to the 15ProMax yesterday and this started today.

Spoke with support and they said the following:

Aha! This is the response I got " Customers may report they are unable to use Face ID to purchase or download apps from the App Store. This issue may also affect the iTunes Store. Settings > Face ID & Passcode reflects that Use Face ID for iTunes & App Store is enabled."

"Based on these errors, please position Apple has received reports of this behavior. Those reports are under investigation.

Affected customers should be encouraged to keep their software up to date as the results of the investigation may come in the form of an update, a knowledge base article, or some combination.

I'm going to add this case to the investigation so the investigators better understand the impact.”

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only person it’s happening to and that they seem to be aware of it.

I just got off the phone (again, this time for the phone and FaceID), with a senior support agent. We went through a million things with no luck.

I've been escalated to "Engineering" who is supposed to be calling me back at some point. I also told them about this discussion and the hundreds of people who are having this issue.

I will update when/if I learn anything helpful.

I just upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro Max from an iPhone 13 Pro and have run into this same issue. I've tried all the suggestions mentioned in here.

  • Ensuring device is up to date with latest iOS
  • Rebooting device with a standard Power Off
  • Rebooting device with a hard power off
  • Toggling Face ID for iTunes & App Store
  • Turning off Face ID for iTunes & App Store, rebooting device, re-enabling Face ID for iTunes & App Store
  • Resetting Face ID
  • Resetting Face ID, rebooting device, re-enabling Face ID
  • Using a different account for Media & Purchases
  • Using a different device (iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max)
  • And every variant or combination of those actions.

I think another user made this same observation, but Face ID in the App Store works fine on my M1 iPad Pro running iOS 17.2.1. As part of my upgrade, my wife took my old iPhone 13 Pro and now she has the exact same issue. The iPhone 13 (my work-issued phone) is the only iPhone device in this scenario that hasn't been newly added to either of our accounts and it exhibits this same issue.

I'm updated my wife's old iPhone 13 Pro (with a cracked screen that we're trading in) to the public beta of iOS 17.3 to see if that fixed anything, but it did not help. I feel like this problem (at least for me) didn't exist until very recently and came about out of nowhere (maybe the device swapping is a red herring), which might indicate it's a server-side issue and not a device-side issue?

I’ve found a solution that’s worked for me.

  1. Go into Face ID & Passcode
  2. disable everything in ‘Use Face ID for’
  3. Reset Face ID
  4. re-enable all Face ID settings
  5. Sign out of Apple ID and sign back in again.
  6. in Apple ID, Media & Purchases select Always Require Password and require password for free downloads.
