Face ID not working for app store

Iphone 15 running ios 17.2.1. Face ID is not working in the app store and I have to manually enter my password. I also do not get the "double click" option, but rather, there is an "install button" that I must select. I've toggled app store on and off in the face id section in settings. I've restarted the phone. I've reset the accessibility features for the double click. Still won't work in app store. Face ID appears to be working everywhere else.

I have not yet had this “fix itself”. The suggestion to just wait also clearly hasn’t worked for me. Another note- Face ID work on my IPad Pro no problem. Face ID works on the iPhone for all other apps, just not the App Store. So it’s not a problem with the hardware. This is clearly a software bug.

Also this happened out of no where. No device swap and u update my phone manually. It did not occur directly after a software upgrade. It just randomly stopped.

Hey! I shared a comment below with a possible fix, since I was having the same issue and could not for the life of me find a fix. It actually ended up being an issue with the payment method on file. It was trying to use a card that was not activated yet. Once I activated it, problem solved. I made the card my default payment method by going to settings, my name, payment & shipping. Once the card was verified/active and set as default, it was fixed. Hope this helps!

I’ve found a solution that’s worked for me.

  1. Go into Face ID & Passcode
  2. disable everything in ‘Use Face ID for’
  3. Reset Face ID
  4. re-enable all Face ID settings
  5. Sign out of Apple ID and sign back in again.
  6. in Apple ID, Media & Purchases select Always Require Password and require password for free downloads.

I just switched from Android to a 15 Pro Max and was having the same issue of the App Store asking for a typed password every time I downloaded something.

This worked for me:

  1. Toggle off all of the Face ID options
  2. Restart phone
  3. Toggle them back on

Prior to doing this I followed @james784:

  1. Go into Face ID & Passcode
  2. disable everything in ‘Use Face ID for’
  3. Reset Face ID
  4. re-enable all Face ID settings
  5. Sign out of Apple ID and sign back in again.
  6. in Apple ID, Media & Purchases select Always Require Password and require password for free downloads.

I'd start with the first set of steps, and if that doesn’t work then do the second set followed by the first.

Same behaviour here, things tried so far:

  • Checked "iTunes and App Store" is ON under "Face ID & Passcode" in settings
  • Toggled the above on/off a few times
  • Turned iPhone on/off/hard reset
  • Reset up FaceID
  • Logged out/into Apple ID

Nothing is working but I have not tried a full reset yet... but appears to not be helping above, it's asking for password every time and not even allowing FaceID.

I've seen various reports of this, but nothing concrete to suggest a reason yet, it started a few days ago for me. My iPhone is a 14PM, I'm on iOS 17.2.1 and I'm currently in the UK. I have a macbook, it started ~3 days ago for me

Note: I have has this iPhone since September, it is *not* a new phone

When Face ID fails to login to the App Store, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot:

  • Make sure that the App Store account and device are both using the same Apple ID
  • Verify that the Face ID has been set up and is enabled
  • Make sure the Face ID is correctly fitted to your face
  • Ensure there is adequate lighting to capture your face
  • Check for any dirt or smudges on the Face ID

Let me know if these resolve turn out to be helpful!
