Face ID not working for app store

Iphone 15 running ios 17.2.1. Face ID is not working in the app store and I have to manually enter my password. I also do not get the "double click" option, but rather, there is an "install button" that I must select. I've toggled app store on and off in the face id section in settings. I've restarted the phone. I've reset the accessibility features for the double click. Still won't work in app store. Face ID appears to be working everywhere else.

I had the same issue as everyone here. After several failed attempts with Apple Support and a trip to the Apple Store, I dug deeper and found a fix that I hope will benefit everyone here still having the Face ID not working in the App Store.


While this seemed to be an issue with Face ID itself, it actually was not. I discovered the issue was in fact within wallet/Apple Pay. I noticed that when trying to make in-app purchases as well as downloading apps in the App Store it was defaulting to “Apple Pay” as the payment method, to where prior to the Face ID issue it was using one of the cards I had on file. This can be found by going to Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping.


Here, you will want to be sure the default payment method is set to a card that is setup and activated in your wallet/Apple Pay. Once my card of choice was setup, the Face ID within App Store and in-app purchases was fixed. For reference, this is on a 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.2.1.

Got it to work. Here's what I did (because I tried a couple of solutions that didn't work).


  1. Logged out of apple store in the apple store app
  2. Turned off all FaceID except in wallet and pay
  3. Logged into apple store in the apple store app
  4. Turned FaceID on for all apps and re-entered my password when prompted. FaceID working as expected in AppStore

Hey! I shared a comment below with a possible fix, since I was having the same issue and could not for the life of me find a fix. It actually ended up being an issue with the payment method on file. It was trying to use a card that was not activated yet. Once I activated it, problem solved. I made the card my default payment method by going to settings, my name, payment & shipping. Once the card was verified/active and set as default, it was fixed. Hope this helps!

SOLUTION:

I had the same problem. Nothing helped: factory reset, face id reset, face id on/off(even all sliders), iPhone restart….. But i found this solution: I had to logout (Apple id,iCloud…) from iPhone and log in back. You will need to add cards to wallet again, but it worked perfectly. The cause of the problem was with my password. I changed it on PC iCloud. When i entered new pass on iPhone without full logout, it started this appstore problem (no face id confirm for download). Hope it helps someone.

It wasn’t working for me without assistive touch or switch control, after trying everything here, I finally just went to Settings>Accessability then went to both switch control then assistive touch, and made sure both switches were toggled off, confirming that I wanted to go back to double click, and now it works for me again. For reference I have the iPhone 14 version 17.2.0 I believe

id did this it worked however. I needed to re add my card and do this.

1: So I did the above section.

2: re add card

3: in App Store: Account > account settings > manage payment > your card > link

4: make a purchase and put in password


Making a purchase seems to finalize it and set it up. From then Face ID in the App Store or a in app purchase should work.

i reset my face id then powered my phone off, turned it back on and set my face id up again but turned face id off for Iphone unlock, itunes and app store, contactless and payments and password autofill. i powered my phone off again and turned face id on for all mentioned above.


after all that i had to verify my apple id password for itunes and app store and then everything was working for me.

My husband just made the switch from Android to iPhone and was having this issue. After following all guidance we found online to make sure everything was turned on or off correctly. What worked was simply opening the App Store, scrolling to the very bottom and signing out. Then signing back in.. as simple as that.


Today out of the blue mine made me log in with my Apple information as well. I did the same thing, logged out and back in and it’s letting me double click to download apps again.

Yes. In Touch ID & Passcode, we toggled off everything except Wallet & Apple Pay. Waited a few minutes, toggled back on (you are prompted for your pw). Then go to AppStore, LOG OUT of it, then log back in. Then try and download an app.


That said, I am pretty sure I’d done that before, but for some reason it worked that time.
