Wireless Apple Car Play in 2024 Hyundai Tucson Limited

Why can’t I connect to Apple Car Play wirelessly in my new Tucson. This is my first Hyundai and I am extremely disappointed I cannot connect CarPlay wirelessly. All other vehicles I have owned provided wireless play connect. This is so antiquated. Just because I have built in navigation should not prohibit the wireless connection. Please fix this with some type of IOS or Hyundai update. Please!

So sorry the update did not work correctly. I've given up hoping Hyundai will deliver a wireless Apple Carplay software update for the 2024 Tucson Limited. I bought a wireless adapter for Apple Carplay on Amazon,Teeran wireless adapter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBG4QRPX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

So far, pretty good. I can leave my phone in my purse and it connects with the adapter when I start the car. I have access to all the carplay features I wanted.

Not sure why you say your car will be processed as a lemon. Were there other problems?

For context, my wife has a 2024 Kona limited. My understanding is that there is some holdup with FCC approval.

Apparently, they (the FCC) have not finished certification testing to allow wireless carplay and android auto on head units with satellite radio in the new models… Ridiculous, but there it is…

I bought her a $49 wireless carplay dongle on amazon. Works great.

UPDATE:

Exec summary: I have successfully updated the software on my Tucson PHEV but, despite the update page clearly stating "You can connect Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto wirelessly without a USB cable!" my car says no.

The procedure I followed to upgrade:

  • Download the Navigation Updater app from this page - https://update.hyundai.com/US/EN/updateNoticeView/GnwBK4
  • Launch Navigation Updater and, in the first screen select your vehicle
  • Plug a USB key (at least 64 GB) into your computer and select it in the next screen - this was the key change from my previous failed efforts which actually followed Hyundai's Instructions
  • You will be warned that the app will erase and format your USB key. Read carefully to ensure it's referring to the USB key you are using for this purpose and confirm
  • The app will simultaneously download the update files and copy them over to your USB key
  • When finished, eject the key, plug it into your car, turn the car on (accessories on is enough) and follow the prompts to update.

In my case, the download/copy took about 30 minutes (300 Mb service) and the install about an hour.

Unfortunately, although the update was 100% successful, my car still tells me this:

Now, I am in Canada, and it may be that despite the page I was directed to by Hyundai Canada promising wireless CarPlay, it may not yet be offered here. I would be interested to hear whether it fixes that deficiency in American models.

As for why the method detailed above worked to update the software, my guess is that a finder copy may have put additional files on the key that frighted and confused the Tucson's operating system, whereas a key that was formatted and populated by the Hyundai app did it just the way the car wanted it.

I contacted Hyundai (ConsumerAffairs@hmausa.com) and this is the response I got. It does have some interesting info at the end about Apple phones. Also, for reference, I have the 2024 Kona that got the update over the air. I’m currently running the latest version of software in my Kona.

“Thank you for contacting Hyundai Customer Care. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your Apple Carplay concerns.

Below are the troubleshooting steps our Bluelink agents try with our customers to help resolve this situation:

Confirm phone compatibility (iPhone5 and above) and phone has the latest iOS version.

• Disconnect the phone and confirm Head Unit "Connectivity" Setting is turned ON.

If settings is enabled, this may be a Phone/cable issue. Try the following:

• Check connection points: Lightning cable to vehicle USB port/phone.

• Disconnect then reconnect the phone.

• Power the phone OFF then ON.

• Check phone's Restrictions setting allows CarPlay (Settings > General > Restrictions > CarPlay > ON)

If condition persist,

• A Hard Reset may need to be performed on the phone. Press and hold the Home button (big circle below the screen) and the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the

iPhone).

• Phone/Cable concerns should be handled by the customer/phone manufacturer.

• NOTE: Recommend using Lightning cable that came with the phone

NOTE: Often Apple phones cannot be used in a "wireless" configuration and has to be a wired connection. This is due to Apple's proprietary software it gives customers problems in these types of situations.

The Over the air updates will occur automatically once available and will inform you if available to start the download.”

Not the update we all want, but that’s where I got so far.

I bought a 2024 Tucson Limited which has a 10.25-inch navigation screen and factory-installed navigation system. I was told an update from Hyundai would be coming that will enable a wireless AppleCarplay connection. Hyundai and Apple resolved their dispute, and the software update was supposed to be available for this vehicle beginning in January 2024. I understand Kona has received the update.

Thanks. The inability of the wireless AppleCarplay and the built-in navigation to work together is the dispute Apple and Hyundai supposedly resolved. It makes no sense that the two are not compatible. In lower-level trims of Hyundai, and more specifically, in lower-level trims of Tucson, the wireless Apple Carplay works seamlessly. As I understand it, the dispute involved which company owned rights to the navigation button on the built-in navigation. This is ridiculous. I drove BMWs before Hyundai. There was a Navigation button in the BMWs and the wireless AppleCarplay worked perfectly. One of those two companies negotiated the right to the navigation button successfully, years ago.

Does anyone have any kind of reference to something authoritative on this issue? What I’ve read here, and elsewhere are things that people heard. It would be nice if Hyundai or Apple could say, authoritatively, what’s going on.

Meanwhile, I can say definitively that the CarPlay setup on my 2024 Tucson PHEV specifically says to use a USB cable.
