Burst mode with using timer

Using the timer (3 or 10 seconds, no difference) my iPhone 14Pro with 17.2.1 when taking a photo, makes a burst of 10 photo's. I cannot find any setting for this (should you not want this). Why should you always have to discard 9 photo's just to use the one? Apple support says it's standard always on burst and cannot be changed. Why would you want this?

The only way around it is to use the flash. When that is "on" it only takes one picture (thanks Patricia666). Reading back in this community, there is confusion all around. So for the random yes-or-no bursts, the answer is in the use of the flash, sometimes it's on, sometimes it's not.

Please Apple, make it a choice if you want to use the burst or not when using the timer....

You didn’t answer the question. The question is how to turn burst mode off not get around it or use it.

I want burst mode turned off permanently. Never to return again! As a photographer, I find it extremely annoying and paternalistic for Apple to insist that I have to use this Utter nonsense when I didn’t ask for i, and don’t want it for… pretty much anything. It’s useless to me. I want it gone!

I agree. Apple, please tell me an easy way to turn off, burst mode in every single setting, ever, so I do not have to turn it off every time I choose my timer or I turn live off. I lose time in opportune moments, as a performer, I have to get, self portraits on the fly, without delaying my cast. Sometimes there’s just a three minute window to get the perfect self timer shot.

It seems that you know the answer based on what you have written (there is no setting to turn it off which you acknowledge knowing). Ultimately you need to submit feedback since you are asking Apple to change the way it currently is. Posting on here unfortunately does not reach the powers that be at Apple. Submit feedback at the following link.

Feedback - iPhone - Apple

This of course does not guarantee that what you are asking for will happen. But it would be viewed by the appropriate people at Apple and if enough customers submit the same type feedback it is more likely to be considered.

Timing a photo does not necessarily mean burst of 10 Photos.

Capture action shots with Burst mode on your iPhone camera

  • Use Burst mode with Camera  to capture a moving subject, or when you want to take multiple high-speed photos so that you have a range of photos to choose from. You can take Burst photos with the rear and front-facing cameras.
  1. Open Camera  on your iPhone.
  2. Swipe the Shutter button to the left.
  3. Lift your finger to stop.
  4. To select the photos you want to keep, tap the Burst thumbnail, then tap Select.
  5. Gray dots below the thumbnails mark the suggested photos to keep.
  6. Tap the circle in the lower-right corner of each photo you want to save as an individual photo, then tap Done.
  • To delete the entire Burst, tap the thumbnail, then tap .
  • Tip: You can also press and hold the volume up button to take Burst shots. Go to Settings  > Camera, then turn on Use Volume Up for Burst.

I don’t understand why Apple has to force users to use features that users are not interested in. I’m amazed to learn that use of timer without bursting is impossible in the world’s most popular phone which is now branded as DSLR killer. Another annoying use of force is when you can’t disable the camera icon from lock screen which means anyone who get a hand on your phone can use camera app and record photos and videos without the need of authentication. The only way to avoid this is removing the camera app itself. Apple says keep it in the Lock Screen or you don’t have it. Sounds bossy. Right?

Using burst mode in connection with a timer might be useful for taking group photos, especially those where you have the phone on a tripod and want to get in the picture yourself. Some people blink when having their picture taken, and if the phone takes a burst of 10 photos, there might be some in which a person's eyes weren't closed.

Odd. I would think flash photos would be the ones where people would be most likely to close their eyes - where having a burst of photos would be most useful.

"Might be useful for taking group photo's" - I agree, but (much) more often you will be taken selfies, even of groups. Using the timer gives you better control over your phone, directing it precisely and conveniently, not having to worry about pressing the button (and shift the phone whilst doing that).

But why not give the best of both worlds. Make it optional, Apple!

Flash with burst is almost continues light. And with large group photo's AND on tripod, the flash on the iPhone is somewhat limited...
