unable to print because of Hold for authentification ( HFA) message.

Getting weak trying to figure this out. Have tried just about every solution provided on the internet, without any success. MacBook Air to HP printer. Printer connected to IMAC. I can select the printer and go through all printing steps, until the print queue shows the HFA.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.12

Maybe the issue is with the configuration on the printer itself and it has nothing to do with macOS at all. Here is one post where the user found a security setting within the printer's own configuration menus accessed through the printer's own web management interface, but should also be accessible from the printer's own LCD menu panel on the printer itself.

"Hold for Authentication" When Trying to Print from a Mac… - Apple Community

Otherwise you did not provide enough information & details.

What is the exact model of your Mac and version of macOS involved? You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

What is the exact model of your HP printer?

What drivers did configure when Adding this printer? HP drivers, or AirPrint, or something else?

How is the printer connected? Directly to the computer with a USB cable? If so, are you using a USB-C to USB-A adapter, dock, hub? If so make & model?

Is this your own home personal printer or one from your employer or school?

Has this printer ever worked with this particular Mac? If so, what has changed since the last time it worked?

Does this printer work with any other computer, OS, or device (phone or tablet)?

Two things. One is did you specify a specific user to access the printer when you shared it from the Mac Studio? Maybe change the setting to allow "Everyone" at least to test things out. I've never used printer sharing on a Mac, but does it prompt you for a user name & password to authenticate when trying to print from the MBAir?

Second problem is that HP does not have a printer driver for macOS 14.x Sonoma, in fact the last driver was for macOS 12.x Monterey. What OS is on the Mac Studio where this printer is connected? I'm assuming you can print from the Mac Studio to the attached printer? What driver is being used on both Macs?

I found this other thread over on Apple StackExchange which suggested turning on Internet Sharing as well as Printer Sharing to see if that makes a difference. You may want to watch this thread for updates:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/467970/cannot-print-to-printer-shared-by-imac-sonoma-from-other-computers

Otherwise I would look at possible Privacy & Security settings which may be interfering.

It may be a new bug, so you may want to provide Apple with product feedback here and wait to see if there is an update which fixes the issue:

Product Feedback - Apple

You can try connecting the printer to a USB port on your router if the router supports sharing USB devices....many routers have this ability. Or you can get a Print Server with WiFi or Ethernet access. At least this avoids any print sharing issues in macOS.

I would suggest getting a new printer with WiFi support since this HP printer is older. I would recommend a Brother laser printer as I have liked several of them which I've gotten for some people I support, plus co-workers and many respected forum contributors have had good success with Brother printers. I would avoid getting a new HP printer due to all the dirty & nasty tricks HP pulls these days and their poor quality of the last 10 years. I always used to use & recommend HP printers, but stopped about 10 years ago.

I am using a MacBook Air M1, 2020 ( running Sonoma 14.2.1) and trying to print to an HP P2035. Since this is an older printer (without wireless ability), the printer is connected (wired) to a MAC Studio. When I click on the recycle icon(?), it tries again with the same result. The printer works with the MAC studio. Previously, the printer worked with an IMAC when connected in the exact same manner. This is a home computer. I hope I have answered all your questions. I have tried every solution I could find.

I have the same problem as OP.

The (HP) printer is not able to do wifi and is connected to a Mac Studio (Sonoma) via USB.

The Mac Studio prints fine

Two Macbook Airs (both Sonoma) print fine via Wifi, so the AirPrint Sharing seems to work.

One iMac (Sonoma as well) cannot print and always get the "Hold for Authentification" error.

Neither of the other computers ever needed to authenticate when printing, I wouldn't even know with which passwords.

Removing the printer and adding it again on the iMac also works, it "sees" the printer

But still the error message remains

Any other advice? What do I need to make sure is identical between the Macs who can print via Wifi and the one who can't?
