Middle of the Night Stand Reminders on Apple Watch

I've been woken in the middle of the night to stand up...again. I get notified on my watch while I am sleeping. I do not have a sleep focus set up but I do have DND on at that time. Why is it doing this? I've been struggling getting notifications in general, especially messages on my new phone (15+) and watch (series 7) and rebooted my watch and iphone last night before bed. Notifications seem to be working now but I don't want to stand up during my DND time.

You can adjust your Daily Stand goal. Here's how:

  • Tap to open the Fitness/exercise ring app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the rings then scroll down to Change Goals.
  • On my Apple Watch, it takes three taps to see the Change Stand Goal.

From there, you can change how many hours per day you will be notified to stand. While you cannot specify which hours you want to be notified, I have mine set to 8 hours and that seems to work for me.

But here is another consideration - check your DND Focus settings to make sure it is blocking everything you want. To do this, open Focus, then tap the three horizontal dots next to Do Not Disturb. Then check that it shows No Apps Allowed.

On my Watch, between these two settings, Reminders to Stand are off until I wake up.

Does anyone have a solution for this yet? I’m writing at 2AM after I was woken up by my watch reminding me to stand…

Google told me to do the following:

How to fix this:

  • Adjust Active Hours:
  • Go into your watch settings, navigate to "Activity", and then "Active Hours" to set the timeframe when your watch should remind you to stand up. Make sure your sleep time is excluded from this window.

The fun part about these instructions is my sleep watch nor phone have an “active hours” timeframe. I ended up disabling my stand notifications as a solution for now.

This probably has a lot to do with the watchOS 11.0-11.3 update, there have been a lot of different problems that were just not an issue before they added this update. Many things this "update" did is make peoples battery worse, mess up different sensors, make your Apple watch not able to receive calls and notifications- The list just keeps getting longer every day. I'm hoping they fix these bugs with future updates. In reality, updates should be making your device better, but it's doing the opposite.

Hey Mam991

Did you ever get a resolution on this? I’m up at 5am because I got that watch haptic alert 10 minutes ago, coaxing me to stand, at 4:50 am, really? Now I’m researching the same issue and came upon your thread. I hope you’re not going to be disturbed about this reply on your thread until a sane time of day!!

I have the same problem as the OP and I have the same settings:

Mirror iPhone’s Focus settings

I have NO APPS allowed during Sleep focus

I have NO PEOPLE allowed during Sleep focus

This watch will still vibrate on my wrist in the middle of the freaking night, in SLEEP mode, with NO APPS allowed.

The answer is not, as you suggest, to be forced by Apple to adjust my daily stand goals in order to accommodate the Apple Watch’s inexplicable idiosyncrasies. The smart watch should be smart enough to know if it’s 3 AM and I have sleep mode on; it should not vibrate on my wrist to wake me to stand!

I have this too, I was woken last night with a stand reminder at 02:50am. Just had the watch a few days and trying to figure it out. Googled because I thought I must be missing the ‘don’t wake me up to tell me to stand in the middle of the night’ setting. Astonished to have found this thread. Kind of reassuring it’s not just me. FYI I had disabled the sleep focus before I went to bed, because that was putting my phone and laptop into sleep focus and (I think) making the watch display go turn off in the evening. I don’t want sleep focus, it’s actually important I get woken up by alerts in the night. But I do want the display to be dim when I’m asleep. Must be missing something, this functionality seems BONKERS. Will go to a Genius Bar and report back.

Sleep Focus is intended to be share across the phone and watch but you can turn it sharing so that it doesn't turn it on on the laptop. I do find that I'm curious about why this matters. Do you leave your laptop open and in the same room you're sleeping in?

You can also change the Sleep Focus settings so that the alerts for things you need to be alerted for still come through.

Hey I experiences this as well— for multiple night and sometimes more than once time in the night. I have a 2023 SE watch, it’s updated to the most version and I do have a sleep schedule.

This morning while opening the fridg the app asked me why “hand washing had stopped”…

This started about two weeks ago ( so in July 2024). Did you find anything to make it stop/better?

I never had this problem until I updated my iPhone to iOS 18 and my Watch to Watch OS 11.2. Last night it woke me up every single hour from 11:50 pm through to 6:50 am. My primary reason for getting a Watch in the first place was to monitor my sleep and nighttime heart function. Being awakened every hour is NOT helpful. By the way, my watch is set to remind me about standing after 6:00 am. I need the daythime movement AND the nighttime sleep. Has this problem really been going on with no "fix" for more than six months. Shame on you, Apple. And I keep recommending your products to my anti-Apple friends! Shame on me.
