Problems with USB-C port on USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

Having problems with USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapters on my MacBook Retina 12 inch 2017 (Ventura 13.6.3).

The USB and HDMI ports work fine but the USB-C doesn't. If I plug the receiver for my remote presentation clicker (for use with PowerPoint) into the USB-C port nothing happens, but if I plug it into the USB port (or directly into the Mac USB-C port) it works.

I need to be able to use all 3 ports for some presentations: USB for memory sticks, HDMI for projector and USB-C for remote receiver. I've tried swapping the remote receiver into the USB port and putting a USB-C to USB adapter (which works fine when plugged directly into the Mac) into the USB-C port for the memory stick, but that doesn't work either.

Apple replaced my original Multiport Adapter after I told them about this, but the new adapter has the same problem.
