MultiCam Audio in FCPX Disappearing

Hey Guys

New to FCP and I've been using YT to get me this far. Here's my problem

I've created a Multicam clip which has synced together as usual using audio. I've done this quite a few times and followed the same workflow. Import each clip, rename camera angles using inspector, create new Multicam. This worked no problem and gave me both clips (each with it's own audio) in one Multicam clip.

Now what I usually do is create another project which I call "Single Multi" then drag the Multicam clip onto that timeline. This creates a new compound clip and allows me to easily edit the angle from both cameras in one place. In effect I have the original Multicam but now it shows as one storyline. I've never had a problem with this method until now.

For some reason, now when I drag the Multicam onto the single timeline, I lose all audio. The audio is showing and working fine in the Multicam clip but vanishes when I create the single timeline. As I've said, this is how I've always done things (as per a YT tutorial) and I can't explain why it's going wrong this time. I'm left with the compound clip for which I am able to flick between angles but neither angle has any audio. It's as though it was left behind in the original Multicam. If possible, I just need to re-enable the audio from the new timeline but have no way of doing so.

I'll put the link to the YT video I watched so you can see exactly how I set this up.

The other issue I always have is that I only ever need one source of audio for the edit. I wear a mic which is linked to my phone. This is the only audio I need to use. The other scratch audio is from the GoPro which is the second angle. Obviously I need this audio to sync the clips together for the Multicam but after that, I just want to use mic audio only. When I've done this in the past (and it's worked), when I edit from angle to angle, I also get the audio from the second angle too which is unwanted. In answering the original question about the audio not transferring to the single timeline, could you also please help with how to turn off the GoPro audio once the Multicam has been created.

Unless you have a specific need, there's no reason to create a compound clip of a multicam.

Create a multicam clip like you've been doing.

Create a new Project (or load an existing Project)

Drag the multicam into the Project's timeline. As Tom said, be sure the Editing Mode is set to "All".

Edit the multicam by choosing the angle you want to see. Use a keyboard shortcut or right-click and choose the angle.

Thanks for your help. I played around and found that if I right click on the Multicam clip and select "create new compound clip" this is the same thing as what I was doing but with less steps. It also worked with the audio being carried over. I'll use this way in future as it seems to work and makes things easier.

I did look at your suggestion of the settings in the angle viewer but all the did was open the project on my second monitor, it didn't actually give me any options to change.

Just as Terry said, there seems to be no reason for putting the multicam inside a compound.

Your screenshot clearly shows that you are in "video only mode":

Click the button that I marked with an oval and you will get the menu that Terry showed. Choose All.

Then drag the multicam from the browser over the one on the timeline and choose Replace.

Can you post screenshots of what you're seeing where?

Are you sure you have video and audio edit active, not just video only?

Not sure the purpose of the video you linked.

BTW, putting a multicam clip in a project doesn't create a compound clip. It's still a multicam clip. You put it in the project to edit it.

Open the angle viewer. Check the settings in this popup icon.

The first one is the Multicam with audio

The second is the compound clip (single timeline) of the same Multicam but doesn't have audio?

I'm not sure how to enable video and audio edit. I've just followed the same procedure as usual. The purpose of the video is to show you exactly what I've done rather then trying to explain it in words (if that's what you mean)

I am trying to do this as you’ve explained which is how I would usually do it. For some reason it isn’t working though

The editing mode which you’ve shown, is that available once the multicam has been dragged into the new timeline?

I can’t seem to find it
