My old iPhone XS has been erased but is locked to me still - how do I fix this ?

My old iPhone XS got badly damaged - screen won’t work , cracked LCD leaking and the camera is damaged . I bought a like for like replacement for less than it would cost to fix . I set up new XS and transferred data and wiped old one remotely . I know want to trade it in for the little it’s still worth , HOWEVER its showing as locked to me but I’ve wiped it off my Find my etc . Clearly this is either an error which needs a work around or I’ve missed doing something - can anyone help ? I can’t log back into it and start again as the screen is completely not working . HELP!!

iPhone XS, iOS 17

If you're using iCloud and Find My [device] on the device, sign in to iCloud.com/find or the Find My app on another device, select the device, and click Erase. After the device has been erased, click Remove from Account. This will turn off Find My.

If the device is removed from an account after it is erased, Activation Lock will be turned off. This allows another person to turn on and use the device.

Unfortunately as I said I’ve already done all this . It is erased off Find my phone . However it is still

locked to me .

I have done a lot more reading around and it seems it is still listed as a trusted device on my new XS BUT it wont let me remove it either and this could be the problem .

I have emailed Apple Support for them to attempt to sort this out . It seems a massive faff when it’s basically an Apple error and I’ve done everything right .
