Can't sign into Gmail on new iPhone

Hi

i have an issue regarding my gmail account

I recently changed my iphone and sold my previous phone also i make sure to sign out my apple id and factory reset that phone before selling it off

Now the problem arise when i try to login my certain gmail account it says google have sent a verification prompt to my previous phone(iphone xs)which I don’t have it in possession and I don’t quite remember the password So i tried to reach to the person who bought it from me and i check that phone throughly there were no traces of my gmail account and also it says open the youtube app to confirm but my gmail it wasnt logged in

so if if there’s anything im missing such if you don’t remove gmail before resetting it remains somewhere in that phone also that old has a different apple id now

In case anyone else is reading this. The same thing happened to me. Instead of turning 2 step authentication off - I went into Manage your google account>security>your devices. My old iPhone was still showing there even though I had reset it to factory settings. I logged out of that device on the laptop and tried again and was able to authenticate my gmail.

Hi - not sure if this was resolved but I followed commenter JDPell suggestion and it worked - quoted it below for reference if someone runs into the same problem again. For me, I logged into my Gmail through Chrome app and it gave an option to send a code via text and then I was able to get into the Gmail app afterwards. Hope it helps for anyone else. Thanks JDPELL!

Same problem here and you don't need your old iphone. GMAIL is in the cloud so any other device with GMAIL will receive the authenticator prompt.

What worked for us.

  1. Delete the GMAIL app from the home screen of the new iphone and re-installed it from the APPS store.
  2. Update the Google Chrome APP if it needs it.
  3. Once installed open GMAIL APP and sign in.
  4. The authenticator prompt should appear on any other device which has GMAIL ie. PC , ipad etc (no need for old iphone).
  5. Select YES it was you and gmail will then be available on the new iphone.
  6. Good luck!

I found a solution. I had the same problem as I damaged my iPhone and it needed to be replaced with a new unit. The Apple Store did the back-up, however, they didn't pull in the verification pieces. I happen to work for an IT company that has Apple lovers. They said if you ever have to replace your phone, ask them to do a full back-up including verification programs. Most of the technicians won't know to do this, so it might take a more senior person at the store to help.

What I did was deleted the G-mail and Chrome app from my phone. Reinstalled only the G-mail app. It had me login, and then started with the MFA "is this you" that's sent to your account. There is a button that say "don't ask me this again" and a link for "try another way". When you click on that you get a message that says you can't use your phone as there's a better way. However, there's another link at the bottom that states "try another way". This then opened a third authentication option utilizing your text feature. Once I entered my phone number and entered the code, I was let in.

I was not able to resolve this issue on my computer, it only worked on my phone. If you do this on your computer, it then sends you to an option to have a recovery e-mail sent to an unregistered e-mail that they need to verify which takes 48-hours. At that point, you have to confirm your identity information with your driver's license and prior details for your Google account.

One of my biggest errors was that I was in a loop with my alternate e-mail account as it required a verification using my G-mail account. My group here said that you need to have your alternate e-mail account only be an account you can access like your work account or utilizing a third party MFA such as Authy or Authenticator. Otherwise, you will be in a constant loop.

I hope this helps.

This is not the Google team. This is the Apple user-to-user support forum. As a reminder, Apple and Google are fierce competitors, and neither Apple nor the Apple users in this forum can solve this for you. Instead go to the support link for gmail: go to mail.google.com and click on the “?” at the top right.

Well, if you don’t know the Google password you are stuck. You can go to Google’s support site, where you can find instructions for resetting your password, then set up 2 factor authentication, then add the account to your iPhone. But this is entirely a Google problem, not an iPhone problem so Google support is a better place to find a solution.

I broke my phone and had to get a new one but when I tried signing into my gmail I got the authentication code on my phone that is broke. I spent like 2 hours on it but I got nothing until. Okay guys from what I did because I think everyone is different. As you’ve probably seen to do is turn off 2 Step Verifcation on Google from another device. I did that on my pc but I was still getting verification codes to input. I don’t know what happened but I signed out of my broken phones account through my pc. And then instead of getting 2 Step Verification codes to my broke phone, I was able to get a text code to my number that I still used. If you don’t know how to do that go to your Google account, then security, and then go to prompt to device. Then you’ll be able to sign out of accounts where ever they are like your old phone or your friends pc. I really hope this helps someone because two step verification is so annoying like bro.

I had this problem, too, after getting a new iPhone. If you can access your Gmail account from another computer or laptop, sign in and disable 2 factor authentication. Then navigate to the "Security" section, select "Your devices," find the old phone in the list, and click "Sign out" next to it to remove its access to your

account.

You should then be able to sign in with your new phone.
