Computer too slow due to kernel panic. What should I do?

My computer has been very slow. It restarts a lot. All the programs take a very long time to load. I ran a check, and it appears I have a kernel panic issue. How can I trouble shoot it, and repair it?

iMac 27″, macOS 14.2

Hey there!

To start, please create an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a simple, helpful utility to diagnose and identify both software and select hardware issues with your Mac.

Downloading

To get started, download EtreCheck:

https://etrecheck.com/en/welcome.html

Click “download” on the site. The app will be downloaded to your Mac to your downloads location, which is the “Downloads” folder by default. This can be accessed by going to the Finder > Go (in the top menu bar) > Downloads.

Open the app, and generate a report

Open the downloaded application, and follow the initial steps to open the app. Choose a problem in the drop-down menu, and click Start. Creating a report typically takes 2-4 minutes on a healthy Mac.

View your report, and upload a copy to Apple Support Community

Once you have your report generated, you can upload it to Apple Support Community for us to review and provide suggestions. Please refer to this document with instructions for uploading your report and using the “Additional Text” function of Apple Support Community:

Thanks for the report!

Antivirus One, VirusScannerPlus, CleanerOne, and DrCleanerProPlus

I recommend you remove these utilities. Mac computers don't benefit from any additional cleaning or anti-virus software, and having them installed often contributes to poor performance and can even damage macOS.

disk3 - Apple Disk Image 1.90 TB ()

What are you using this disk image for? It appears to be very large and EtreCheck flagged it as a potential performance issue.

Check Disk Health

Your Fusion Drive performance scores are relatively low. This could be the result of the third-party software, but I suggest you check the physical health with DriveDx.

Nothing stands out with either drive.

If you are still getting Kernel Panics even after fully uninstalling those apps mentioned by @Jack-19, then I recommend running Disk Utility First Aid on the Fusion Drive item. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. If there are, then run First Aid again to see if those errors get fixed, otherwise you will need to run First Aid while booted into Recovery Mode. If the errors still cannot be repaired even while booted into Recovery mode, then you will need to erase the whole Fusion Drive as GUID partition and APFS (top option)....personally I would break the Fusion Drive & recreate the Fusion Drive at that point.

More than likely the issues shown in the EtreCheck report regarding the drive was caused by those apps, but I can also see a file system issue causing a problem as well. If you continue to have Kernel Panics, then run EtreCheck again and post the new report here so we can be sure those apps have been completely removed and to see what the new errors may be along with a fresh analysis of the drive performance.

Thank you for this very helpful suggestions Yes, those four programs I installed when the computer starting to run slow and I was trying to figure out why. I figured making sure there are no viruses and cleaning my drives was a good place to start. So the slow problem came first. The computer also runs very slow for the others users in my family, who don't have those installed.

The 1.9TB is the Time Capsule that I have on the network for back up. Might the continuous downloads be slowing me down?

Will do!

Much appreciative!

THank you so much of this great advice!

I did all of those things. The virus software would not erase, and took some digging. Ultimately I had to go to recovery mode for Disk Aid. There was an error that kept coming up with dry-stats object. I ran Disk Aid a few times, and it was still there.

Sounds like I need to save what I have to my Time Capsule, and erase the hard drive and restart.

Much appreciative!
