14.3 Mail.app - Corrupted/Garbled Text When Composing Messages

After updating to 14.3, I've noticed Mail.app messages (replies or new) will begin garbling and corrupting text display while you're writing (similar to writing in this field here). Usually when you've written a few paragraphs, the prior (or even current) text will garble with previous content, moving it around, erasing some, or even overlaying it with a previous paragraph.

Importantly, the text itself is not changed, as can be seen if you just ignore it and keep typing. However, if you stop and try to select the text, it cannot be grabbed, since it's not really there. It is a visual corruption only, but when you don't know what you have written, it's hard to confirm what's, well, written.

I've restarted, as well as reinstalled the OS with no change.

This is while Mail is in fullscreen and the message is using split-screen.

There clearly seems to be a text display bug (graphics or WebKit perhaps), but I'm trying to determine if it's just me or others are noticing it as well. I will also file a bug (Feedback Assistant) on the issue.

Upgrade to MacOS 14.3.1.

It should fix the problem, which was in WebKit. The software update explicitly says it is a fix to this erratic display problem when editing. In addition to Apple Mail, this was occurring in other apps that use WebKit.

It's a bit scary to see something like this with a brand new computer, and wonder if something is wrong with the new M3 Pro Apple Silicon hardware. I certainly did, until I saw in this forum that it was happening to many different computers, including ones with Intel processors.

This display issue when editing is a documented software bug that 14.3.1 should fix.

The frequency is partially dependent on the length of them email. If it's a short, quick email, nothing may go amuck.

If it's a multi-paragraph email with various editing and recomposing, then the garbled text mess happens much more often. And, the degree of "garbling" is much worse - like whole sentences and paragraphs moving around / getting overlaid with one and another.

I've not seen it in Safari, for example, typing replies to this thread is fine. So far (for me) it has been just the Apple Mail.

I'm having the same issues: M2 Max laptop, Sonoma 14.3. And it's driving me NUTS. If I had the option to write two sentence emails, I would text.

Once the text garbling starts, I've resorted to saving the offending email as a draft and rebooting. Then I'm good for one or two emails before it starts again. OR I've also been composing emails in Word or Pages or InDesign and then copying/pasting them over to my email. Neither are acceptable.

Please fix Apple!

I appreciate anyone raising a hand or posting. It shows how many are dealing with this insanity and the hope it gets fixed! I have stopped doing any lengthy emails because of it and try not to email (impossible). I have attempted other emails Google , Protonmail, and the same issue persists. I have seen display issues on Safari and in messages as well. This bug/display is not just an email-related issue.

Thank you all for who are posting. Yes, me too, or raising a hand. It is helpful when someone is searching for wtf is going on and looking for a fix to this issue. It is not your device. It is an Apple buck-up & we are all waiting for an update to resolve it.

I have experienced the same. I think it even happens in Safari. I witnessed, that in a Safari text box my written text suddenly wraps around, seemingly unnecessary. At first, I thought it was just some kind of late readjusting. Later on I witnessed the same behaviour in Apple Mail and then I saw that it wasn't just a readjusting, but my text was replaced with the paragraph above. And that's why the computer had to readjust the text, since it changed.

I think the same happened in the Safari text box.

That's a nasty bug and I hope Apple fixes it soon. At least I am not alone with it which makes it more likely to be addressed rapidly.

I am on an M1 Max MacBook Pro.

I'd said yesterday that I hadn't had the problem in a couple of days after starting my MacBook Air in Safe Mode. But today the problem occurred while in Safe Mode so just wanted to report that.

Thanks to the folks who identified the problem as being associated with the inline predictive text feature. That kind of figures. At least we have a specific cause. Hope it doesn't take long for Apple to fix it.

Thanks for doing this with Apple Support. I also reinstalled the OS to no effect (because it's an OS/WebKit issue, not a random glitch on my installation). If I have some time, I may bite the bullet and suffer this as well.

Has anyone noticed if this issue occurs after installing the latest Safari beta (not Technology Preview), as this should replace the system's WebKit version (where Tech Preview runs separately).

I didn't install the safari beta but I did turn on lockdown mode on my Mac and restarted. Then I tried to see if it would happen in mail typing many paragraphs but it didn't happen. Not sure if this helps or if you were using lockdown mode. I only tried one email though so will have to see if this makes any difference. I wasn't using lockdown mode when this text issue kept happening. I am using a 2018 Mac mini Intel model.

It's been happening to me also on my 2018 Mac mini and running 14.3. Started since the 14.3 update. I was glad to find this post since I didn't know what was going on. It makes trying to write a email so frustrating with lines of text moving around, large spacing also forming and disappearing. Text overlaying on top of other text.

Sad to have no peace even trying to type a email now. Always so many bugs. I did send feedback in the app on the Mac to apple. Couldn't even switch users today from the menu bar. Fast user switching wasn't responding. I wanted to update for the security fixes of 14.3 but think I will hold off in the future. I don't know. All these bugs are making using my Mac even worse.
