iPhone 13 triggering false overheating warning, battery decline (4 months old)

So I bought my first iphone, a brand new iPhone 13 256GB red colour in August 2023. Everything was great, and I was excited and happy with my purchase. I buy a water-proof case and put the iPhone in it (I don’t take it out). Everything goes well for the first 3 months. Then I start noticing in January 2024 the battery is NOT lasting as long as it did when I just bought it (iPhone still says battery health is 100%). Then I charge it while using it and get a warning saying my phone is too hot and will not charge over 80%. I take it out of the case and the phone is BARELY warm, clearly a false trigger. I’ve been using it a lot during the Christmas holidays, but I’m alarmed that this is occurring so soon. It’s dropping a percentage every 2-3 minutes. Should I be worried, and therefore get it replaced?

On an iPhone warnings are never false if you have not Jailbroken your device.

📱Facing iPhone heating issues? Here's what worked for me on my iPhone 12 Pro:

1️⃣ Backup on iCloud/iTunes

2️⃣ Log out of Apple ID

3️⃣ Erase (Keep eSIM Data)

❌ DO NOT restore from backups! Set up as new iPhone. Wait 2-3 days - no issue! That Indicates...

✅ No hardware/ iOS issue

Now...

📦 Restore data gradually

🔍 Find app/settings causing heat

My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.

I am not aware of the ambient temperature in which you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

Shenanigans! Mine is doing the same thing. I have not jailbroken my iphone, it can sit in front of an ac for hours until it is very cold to the touch powered down and it will throw the warning before I can enter my 6 digit password. And yes it's been factory reset, and no I haven't even been able to restore it at all because it "overheats" before I can even get to an option to restore it or sign into any accounts

What did the staff at the Genius Bar tell you when you took it in to have them check it?

What the original poster described was not an iPhone overheating. They were seeing the normal alert for Optimized Battery Charging and not understanding it. If an iPhone is overheating, it will shut down, not just stop charging.
