iPhone has been replaced (serial number)

I wanted to buy an used iPhone from someone. I wanted to check its serial number on apple and it said: We’re sorry, but this is a serial number for a product that has been replaced. Please check your information and re-enter your serial number. If your information is correct, you may need to contact us. Can someone tell me what does this mean?

That means the phone was replaced by Apple as damaged or defective and was not returned to Apple as required, or that it was reported stolen from Apple Stock or in transit.

No support is available for that device. Apple won’t touch it for service under any circumstances.

Don’t go anywhere near it.
