I wanted to buy an used iPhone from someone. I wanted to check its serial number on apple and it said: We’re sorry, but this is a serial number for a product that has been replaced. Please check your information and re-enter your serial number. If your information is correct, you may need to contact us. Can someone tell me what does this mean?
That means the phone was replaced by Apple as damaged or defective and was not returned to Apple as required, or that it was reported stolen from Apple Stock or in transit.

That shouldn't be able to happen. When Apple refurbishes a device, it gets a new serial number.
Nobody's perfect. As the message chanelsve got suggests, if this isn't due to a typo, it's best handled by Apple Support.

Only if it got returned and they sent it out again. This may happen if they were able to repair a returned unit, or they used a previously traded-in one as a replacement, or someone bought a refurbished one from their official store.
