Messages won't finish indexing on macbook - cannot access older messages but can sometimes see part of the message appear in the sidebar when searching

I have been trying to access some of my messages from over 4 years ago lately and every time I run into issues where iMessages needs to finish indexing. There are a TON of old messages & attachments that are not loaded on my phone that I do not want to lose by attempting to turn imessage off and back on for my computer (even though I know they're stored in the cloud just don't want to risk it before I'm sure), but this issue has persisted across 2 computers so I imagine that fix would not help much as I've already started imessage from scratch up on this computer for my icloud account.

Under the warning it reads:

What can I do to solve this?
