My Apple Watch 9 is acting weird - Is this a bug?

My Apple Watch 9 (bought mid December 2023) just started going crazy. It was switching apps, trying to enter passcode, and then finally, after two minutes of trying to stop it, sounded the siren and called 911. I had to explain to the operator that my watch was going crazy and had called spontaneously. She seemed unfazed by this, so i'm assuming this is a common occurrence (also judging by other comments and questions in the forum). I was able to hard reboot my watch, which seems to have fixed the issue (but we'll see). My question is, does anyone know why this is happening? This has to be an issue known to Apple (as it's been reported on other models as well and for several years (oldest commentary I see is from 2020). Is this a bug? A virus? (If so, is there a way to remove it?) If anyone has any information it would be helpful. This happened to me in the midst of a meeting with many people around. Is it just a function of having to restart/reboot the watch periodically?

Mine just started doing this! Trying a force restart because it wouldn’t let me turn it off. Screen is jumping all over the place and the watch is not responding at all. Just bought it in November. Had my previous own for years with ZERO issues so I’m not pleased.

Hello everyone, just came across this thread on 2/2/2024. Mine started with me clicking the button on the side to see battery level and suddenly I see passcode entering on its own, apps opening and switching, entries I never made happening on the watch. I started off with wiping the underside with a clean soft cloth. Next I took off the protective cover and band which got me down to just the watch itself. The behavior continued which brought me to support. I will try putting it on the charger and see what happens. Really starting to get tired of paying Apple money and getting subpar software.

Me too! This is the second time this has happened to me in the past 6 months. This time the timer started, I tried to stop it and screen went crazy, flashing really fast. I tried pressing the crown. Then siren sound and it called 911. There was no way to cancel it. I told the operator my watch went crazy. She replied….no problem. After calling 911, I pressed the crown and the phone acted normal. I did a reboot anyway.

By the way, this was at 2:15am. I had just returned from restroom. Now I am wide awake.

I just saw there is a watch update so I am installing that now. I’ll reboot again after the update as a previous poster recommended. Hopefully after that I can go back to sleep. I’ll call Apple Support Monday.

This just happened to me today. My watch went completely berserk. I was in the kitchen reading the mail, had my watch on but wasn’t touching it at all. It sent SOS alerts to my emergency contacts, sounded the emergency alarm, was zooming through/opening all of my apps, wouldn’t respond to touch (I tried to stop the emergency call), and then my screen locked and the passcode screen was literally entering/punching numbers in on its own. I thought my watches had been hacked and taken over remotely. I was able to get a few seconds of the passcode screen/numbers being entered but outside of that, I was too distracted to capture more of the issue because I was trying to stop my watch from calling emergency services and sending SOS messages.

I have just had the exact same thing!! my apple watch start spazzing out and i couldn’t do anything to stop it, it called emergency services and then started messaging my emergency contacts i’ve been in an accident, when my Nan has just had a massive stroke and my parents are in the hospital with her!!! Talk about bloody timing, i’m absolutely fuming, it’s also locked itself and i can’t seem to do anything with it now. My old apple watch was perfect, never had a problem with it.

I updated mine in Jan 2024, and it has malfunctioned every day since. Contacted and spent 10+ hours with CS-Tech support. Restarts, resets, unpairing fixed it for a couple days, then back to where we started. Workout mode was super functional until the update. Now, it jumps to laps, segments and other function but won’t tell me distance at a glance. Finally, replaced it with a Garmin.

I have been having the same issues with my watch. Texting weird things, trying to open up all my apps, calling 911, and then trying multiple passwords and locking me out of my watch for hours.

I downloaded the new software update and it still has issues. My watch was sitting on the charger and then I get a phone call from my kids stating they got an emergency sos text from me. I eventually took it off the charger and turned it off. Not sure what to do now.

For everyone that responds trying to downplay play this “bug” it isn’t helping.

I'm not downplaying anything; just being realistic. If something goes wrong only once, there's almost nothing you (or anyone else) can do about it. If it happens more than once, have Apple run diagnostics.
