My Apple Watch 9 is acting weird - Is this a bug?

My Apple Watch 9 (bought mid December 2023) just started going crazy. It was switching apps, trying to enter passcode, and then finally, after two minutes of trying to stop it, sounded the siren and called 911. I had to explain to the operator that my watch was going crazy and had called spontaneously. She seemed unfazed by this, so i'm assuming this is a common occurrence (also judging by other comments and questions in the forum). I was able to hard reboot my watch, which seems to have fixed the issue (but we'll see). My question is, does anyone know why this is happening? This has to be an issue known to Apple (as it's been reported on other models as well and for several years (oldest commentary I see is from 2020). Is this a bug? A virus? (If so, is there a way to remove it?) If anyone has any information it would be helpful. This happened to me in the midst of a meeting with many people around. Is it just a function of having to restart/reboot the watch periodically?

MY Apple watch 9 same problem early this morning, the calling 911 alarm (SOS alarm?) woke me up, fortunately pressing crown enough times stopped it. Then there was a flash of apps popping up it seemed to stick on the music app apparently playing Kinks songs from the iPhone. Trying to stop that it called 911 again, which I was able to stop. I took the watch off and that seemed to stop the apps from popping up. Did the reset, put the watch back on, and half way down the hallway the 911 alarm started again. Took off the watch and went to apple support chat. My firmware was 10.2 with 10.3 waiting in the wings. Updated the firmware and the problem seems to have stopped. So watch seems to working now.

Bottom line, yes this is a problem.

After two calls with support I *think* it's fixed. After the same problem I did these things:

  1. I did a reboot by holding down the crown and side button. This stopped all symptoms.
  2. I installed the 10.4 update. The SOS calls to my ICE restarted after the update.
  3. I un-paired the watch to my iPhone and then paired it again. That happened about 2 hours ago. So far it seems to be good. My router sees the reset watch as a different device than it was before the re-pairing.

I'm back. I took my Watch Series 9 into the Apple Store yesterday and the tech at the Genius Bar couldn't get it to reset, either, in order to install the 10.4 software. The store manager said she should send it in to Apple so that they could ensure the hardware was working properly. So, drop off on April 2, it's scheduled to be returned by mail on April 9. She said if they can't fix it, they'll replace it with a new one. I have Apple Care, so no charge.

My series 9 did this today. (Sat 6/4/2024 Australia).

Went crazy opening apps, clicking emojis in messenger apps etc.

It rang 000 (emergency number in Australia… very embarrassing, I was able to talk and say I wasn’t in trouble luckily), then it messaged and called my husband.

It started making all kinds of noises.

Phone and Siri could not shut it down.

It started adding passcodes and blocked itself 1 min… then 3 mins… I was nervous it would lock itself and me out! It got faster and faster.

Hard reboot on watch wouldn’t work but I finally had luck wiping it completely from my watch app on my phone.

I had to set it all up again.

Watch was purchased in Nov 23 directly from Apple Aust. Website.

Put Apple Watch on its charger.

Press and hold the side button until you see the screen with the power button in the upper-right corner, then let go of the side button. If your Apple Watch has an earlier version of watchOS, you see the Power Off slider instead of the power button.

Press and hold the Digital Crown until you see the red Reset button.

Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.

After Apple Watch unpairs completely, you can pair again. Remember that you'll need the Apple ID and password that were used to set up the watch. Set up as New Watch.

Update phone to iOS17.4.1 and watch to watch OS 10.4

My Apple Watch 9 has done the same thing twice. It started by opening apps multiple apps, alerting my emergency contacts, and calling 911. The police came to my house, and I explained that my watch called them against my will. When I took the watch off, it kept trying to enter my passcode. Once I was finally able to shut down, it rebooted back to normal, but this can't keep happening. The watch is only a few months old and should have a 1-year warranty. Has anyone attempted to contact Apple to get a replacement?

The same happened to me right now and I googled and found this post and signed in to share here.

Apple Watch started to jump and navigate to different screens and open Apple Music, and Browser and ask for location permission. I could not stop it from acting weird. Eventually started texting my husband, and calling 911.

I tried force reboot and again repeated all this!

I put my phone in Flight mode and then rebooted the watch again to resolve the issue.

I have videos of the event as evidence!!

Happened to me too last night.. kept going crazy and putting in random numbers for my passcode meaning I was eventually locked out for 4 hours. I let it run down battery wise the recharged it and now fine. I noticed that an update was halfway through happening when it went crazy so I think it was probably down to the update … seems fine now fingers crossed

This happened with my wife’s Apple Watch series 9. I honestly thought her phone and watch had been hacked. The PIN code screen was up and numbers were randomly entering themselves then a time delay appeared triggered by the random pin entries. Couldn’t do anything the watch so reset it with the watch app and restored it to factory setting also updated her phone to latest version of iOS. Apple what is going on ?
