Sorting photos manually in a Photos album stopped working in MacOS 14.3?

I just updated MacOS to version 14.3. Right after that, rearranging the order of photos in an album became impossible: When I drag a photo, it seems to move and an empty space opens to a new position but when I release the photo, it jumps back to its original position. I have tried "everything" to fix Photos: rebooting, booting in Safe Mode, apps Onyx and Clean MyMac X, repairing the Photos library.... No help. However, when I boot in Safe Mode it is possible to reorder the photos. To note, I haven't installed anything after the 14.3. update, so a new extension cannot be the cause. MacBook Pro M2. All comments welcome!

Well that's a clue, isn't it?

First, stop using Clean MyMac-- it's been known to screw up Photos databases.

Next-- try making a new user and see if it's still a problem. There may be login items (like Clean MyMac) that are interfering with Photos. A new user would start with a clean slate.

You could also try making a new Library (close Photos and option-click on the Photos icon) and adding a few pictures to it to see if it's the Library itself that is at fault'

I have tried "everything" to fix Photos: I appreciate the quotes....

CleanMyMac claims another victim. You're not alone. This forum is full of literally thousands of instances where CMM fouled up someone's system or applications.

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.

Uninstall CMM and Onyx according to the developer's instructions.

Did you backup the Photos library itself to Google Photos or just the photos themselves? Or are you running the library from Google? Don't see how you could do that.

Google is a know miner of personal data and, IMO, one should stay away from any and all Google products. But then, that is just my opinion and I haven't had any problems since the first Mac in 1984.
