I just bought a Macbook Pro 14" and find the grey edges/vignette effect on the display very distracting. It makes anything on screen look like it's bending away towards the edge, as if there was a 1/4" bevelled edge. I've never experienced it on any laptop before, and adjusting brightness and other settings doesn't seem to change it.
Does anyone have any hints/tips to 'disguise' this visual effect?

Hard to say without actually being able to see the issue. You can try posting a picture, but many times they may not do the issue justice.
You will probably need to take the laptop to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined to see what they have to say about it.
If you are dissatisfied, then you have 14 days to return the laptop at least in the US so I've read on this forum.

Thanks. I get the feeling this is a standard effect as lots of people have mentioned it and I've seen a few pics from a google that look roughly the same. I'm an artist and designer so I get the sense it perhaps bothers me more than it would many others.
It's a lovely laptop aside from that, a huge improvement over my last one. I guess I'll pop into an Apple store and see how the ones on display look for comparison and consider my return options if I can't ignore the distortion.
FWIW for anyone else bothered by the issue: I did find shrinking the windows you're working in to sit just inside the shaded edge region helps, though it does mean you're working in a smaller space. It also doesn't disguise the top menu distortion. You could try dark mode to hide that bit, but I always prefer to work in light mode, personally.
Did you adjust the Accessibility System Settings for the Display? For some weird reason the macOS default is to allow items behind a window to bleed through, this even includes the menu bar. If you don't want the default Transparency feature, then make sure to check the box for "Reduce Transparency". I doubt this is causing the effect you mention. I think I may even see a bit of the effect on my laptop, but my eyes don't see as clearly as they once did so subtle effects are harder for me to discern.
