I currently have 2 authorized computers, and iTunes indicates 6 authorized systems. I have removed the systems I no longer use, old computers etc. to no avail. Has anyone experienced this issue and may know of a fix?

You cannot "remove" old computers. Instead, you need to go into your account and De-Authorise All computers and then Authorise the one(s) that you have now.
