Blue tooth and hearing aids

I've been having problems with Bluetooth connectivity to hearing aids. I've tried to different brand of hearing aids, including Widex and Oticon. Both have the same issue. Currently using most recent operating system but this spans previous operating systems as well. My current iOS version is 17.3. All firmware has been updated on hearing aids, so this is not the issue. What occurs in my case is that Bluetooth phone calls cut in and out during the conversation particularly when the conversation goes on for several minutes. As the length of the call increases the problem worsens. I've tried turning off all notifications, making certain that apps are not running while on a call, paired the hearing devices multiple times, resetting network settings, resetting all settings on the iPhone, turned Wi-Fi call assist of off and on with no results, rebooting the phone, turned on and off hearing aid compatablilty settings, made sure that blue tooth was only connected to the hearing devices with routing always to hearing devices, made sure that no other devices are bluetooth paired to the phone just to name some of the things tried. A hard reboot on the phone fixes the problem for a few hours, then it returns. Hearing aid companies are unable to solve the issue. Of note, I can stream music via Bluetooth directly to my hearing aids without interruption. Never a missed beat with music only with phone calls. The problem is not location specific and 4 bars on the cell service is noted, so not a cell tower problem. My suspicion is that this is either a setting on the iPhone or something inherently wrong with a bug in the iOS regarding bluetooth connectivity with hearing aids. This significantly impacts my work and would greatly appreciate Apple looking into the problem. Looking at forums, Internet, search, and every avenue I have not been able to find a solution, but I've seen similar problems across Internet posts.

Am no expert in this area, yet your post surely deserves some response.

Wondering whether the hearing aids you have are "Made for iPhone" (MFi) compatible.

Apple Support have articles online (links below) that may help.

Find out which hearing devices are compatible with your iPhone.

(There is quite a number of both Oticon and Widex Hearing Aids listed n the article below

you might want to check whether yours are on the list or not,)

List of Made for iPhone hearing devices - Apple Support

Often the manufacturer's website has a "support" section with tips for trouble-shooting and remedying disconnection problems with particular hearing aids.

One of the tips in Apple Support's : Use Made for iPhone hearing devices - Apple Support

says:

"Hearing device disconnects unexpectedly"

  • When using your hearing device, make sure that your paired Apple device remains nearby.
  • If your hearing device is paired with more than one Apple device, it might switch (hand off) to the other Apple device when it detects an incoming call on that device, or when you start playing audio on the other device.
  • You can control this by changing the Audio Handoff setting in Hearing Devices settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Check the battery level of your hearing device.

You might need to replace or recharge the batteries.

NB: One of the symptoms of wireless interference is that the device doesn't stay connected.

If you'd like to update:

About iOS 17 Updates - Apple Support says the latest version is iOS 17.3.1

"This update provides bug fixes for your iPhone .."

If you aren't already using the setting below, you may want to try it out :

Use hearing devices with iPhone - Apple Support

Eg: says you can:

"Turn on Hearing Aid Compatibility

Hearing Aid Compatibility may reduce interference and improve audio quality with some hearing aid models.

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Hearing Devices.
  2. Turn on Hearing Aid Compatibility."
