Apple Mail cannot log into Outlook.com

Started about 2 weeks ago, Feb. 10/2024. While travelling, I cannot log into Outlook mail using IMAP. I have been doing this for years on this machine..

I have this dialogue box...

MacBook Pro using Sonoma 14.3.1 (23D60).

I chalked that up with the VPN I was using at the time at the hotel. But it lingered. IOS on on iPhone and iPad are OK. So is logging into it using a browser. I changed and made sure the password is strong and good.

When returned home, I tried using Mac Studio, Sonoma 14.3.1 (23D60). to no avail. tried to disable this Outlook account and create another one. Same issue.

Hope someone has the same issue.

I had the same problem. It only occurred in the macOS Mail.app. I was able to access using any browser of my choice. if you aren't already using Microsoft Authenticator, go and set it up for your account.

Delete the account from macOS Settings:

Settings > Internet Accounts > outlook.comaccount > Delete Account

Respond yes if prompted to allow data to be deleted.

Add the account using macOS Account Settings

Settings > Internet Accounts > Add Account

-- if prompted to let the system find a microsoft account on your system, respond 'Yes'; then allow access.

-- Microsoft Authenticator should sent a code. Use that code.

if it all worked, In the end, there won't be a password entry in Mail.App:

Mail.app > Mail > Settings > Accounts > (select your outlook accout) > Server Settings

-- below your email address, the password box should be blank (no '*****')

-- verify that Automatically manage connection settings is CHECKED.
