Found an iPad

My friends found an iPad while cleaning an apartment. We tried to unlock it but we’re not successful. How can we inform the owner who has Find My and all that stuff on there? We did not steal the device. It was left behind when owner moved out. We just want to get it back to the owner as it is of no use to us if we can’t unlock it.

iPad (3rd generation)

Apple cannot (and will not) assist with reuniting a lost device with its owner. Unless a found device has an active network connection - and the owner has marked the device as lost with a visible message in-screen, you’ll not be able to identify the owner or any contact information.

The best advice that can be offered is that you hand the device to your local authorities - along with a description of where and when the device was found.
