Screen share from MacBook Air on WiFi to Apple TV HD on LAN

I recently switched my Apple TV HD from connecting to my home network via WiFi to a wired LAN connection. I tried screen sharing from my MacBook to the Apple TV but the TV was not listed among available share targets. I decided to switch the TV from the wired IP connection to WiFi, but could not find a way in the Apple TV’s network settings to do that. Instead, I had to unplug the IP cable. That caused the TV to connect via WiFi and I could then send my MacBook screen to the TV.

Is this expected behavior? Shouldn’t there be a way to switch the Apple TV over to WiFi without having to physically disconnect the LAN?

thanks

  1. When anything is plugged into the ethernet port of the Apple TV box, then it detects that and expects wired ethernet network connectivity, and Wi-Fi is disabled. So, you have to unplug that for Wi-Fi options.
  2. AirPlay and Screen Mirroring can be supported over ethernet and Wi-Fi mixed, if the router is configured to see both as one logical network (same subnet). If these are managed as separate, then devices on one part cannot communicatie with devices on the other part — instead only internet connectivity (i.e. beyond the LAN). Thanks Urquhart1244. This was very helpful. This morning I plugged the IP cable back into the Apple TV and saw that it was on the same subnet as my wifi devices. I tried sharing the MacBook screen again and the TV was in the list of available targets - so I was able to share the screen with no problems. Now I wish I'd checked the TV subnet last night - but so it goes. FWIW, this was the first time I tried a screen share since switching my home network gear to eero. Perhaps that's relevant.

In any case, it's all working now. Thanks again for your assistance.
