Can I edit PDFs or Preview Docs w/ Mac?

W/o Word or the paid version of Adobe, is it possible to edit a PDF or Preview document on my Mac? When I search, it sounds like you can but most are add-on pieces of software I hate to try using. I know you can add text and stuff but I can't figure out if it is possible to actually delete or otherwise change words (not just cover them).

Trying to decide if I need to give up on trying to use Pages and pay for Word or something so I can work with family that tend to send PDF &/or Word documents.

Thanks!

Many PDF editors on Mac can meet your requirements. You can choose one according to your needs.

Here are some free PDF editors or online services available.

Preview: This built-in app on Mac allows you to perform basic PDF editing tasks such as "add text and stuff" like you mentioned. But Preview couldn't actually delete or change the orginal texts.

PDF Candy(online service)

Sejda(online service)

Next are some paid PDF editors that could fulfill your needs:

Adobe Acrobat

PDFExpert

Nitro PDF

Please feel free to choose a PDF editor that suits you. Hope it will be helpful!

Apple does not include a PDF editor (change original PDF content) in macOS — only a PDF reader (Preview) that allows you to apply a separate annotation layer over existing content, or just view the PDF. The current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader is even more capable as a PDF reader, and optionally, can be configured via subscription to convert PDF documents to Microsoft documents.

You can use the Finder's Quick Look feature with PDFs and Word documents by clicking once on the file in the Finder, and then pressing the Space bar.

Microsoft Word 16.31 or later can open and convert a PDF into a Word DOCX document. The results may require further Word document editing to clean up the content, but Word is not a PDF editor or reader.

If you want to edit original PDFs that are not password restricted, then you will need to pay for any of the available PDF editors in the Mac App Store, or separately from Code Industries Master PDF Editor.
