Issues connecting to cellular data on iPhone After Update

Today I updated my iPhone form iOS 16.0 to 17.4. When I opened my phone I found that I was no longer connected to my cellular data. When my wifi is off and my cellular is on, I get popups saying “Cellular Data is Turned Off.” I also keep getting popups to update my carrier settings but when I click update it shows me the popup a second time. Then, it appears again a few minutes later. Something to note is that I am currently on roaming since I am out of my home country.

So far I’ve tried:

  1. restarting my phone
  2. resetting network settings
  3. deleting any vpns in settings
  4. updating my carrier in settings (this did not appear)
  5. manually setting my provider since i’m on roaming
  6. contacting tmobile support (they said ask apple)

Any idea what I could do to fix this issue? Haven’t found anyone on here with the same problem.

Ok, listen up:

After the 17.4 update i lost my service or at best it was very spotty. My number couldnt be verified, i wasn't able to receive or make most calls, and my iMessage went to green messages for everyone (even wouldn't send at times). I spent about 6 hours collectively trying to resolve the issue, 5 of those being on the phone with apple support and my carrier and we tried e v e r y t h i n g. Resetting my number, network settings, phone, iMessage, FT, running diagnostics, etc. We even switched me to an eSIM.

FACTORY RESET. I tried this as a last resort on my own before using my refurbished phone warranty to simply replace the device, and boom, everything is fixed. I did choose the “keep eSIM and erase data” option under reset.

Anyways, super frustrating issue and I imagine it can only be due to the update, but yup, save your time and fix it by backing up and resetting.

Same for me with my iMessage and FaceTime not working. Since updating it’s just not activating, just spinning. I’ve been in contact with both my network provider and Apple. I was on the phone with Apple support for 2 hours trying to explain the issue, they have had to raise it with engineers in the US as they couldn’t resolve it, they refused to indicate it was an update issue when I questioned it however. I updated to 17.4 before bed and noticed it wasn’t working in the morning.

I did all the standard things, soft resetting, network reset, and it’s happening in both my eSIM and physical sim both different providers (same network) but I believe it’s the update that’s done this.

So I lost all cellular connection after the 17.4 update and the diagnostics said that there was a hw issue.

Anyway, the insides of my phone were all replaced. They repaired it pretty fast 2 days, but it was still pretty disruptive for my work and leisure to have a replacement phone and then set up bank app, cards in Apple pay, etc.

Glad the issue got sorted and hopefully it won't happen again after the warranty.

I have iPhone 13 Pro Max. It was great, when it was on 17.3.1. Right after update to 17.4 I have big issues with cellular - it just don’t work (right after every reboot of the phone I have about 2 minutes when it would work, after that if you want to continue to receive calls or use cellular internet, you need to reboot again).

I tried to reload from pc backup and to restore phone completely - nothing helped.

After Apple Store customer service checks, they made a conclusion, that there is a hardware problem with cellular. They said, that it could be fixed only replacing motherboard, which costs nearly 500$ in my location. To my question, why the problem appeared exactly after the update and there are a lot of people like me, they could not answer anything clearly. I could apply for trade-in program, but if my phone have only this problem they will give me 0$ discount, so I decide not to buy another iPhone :)

I really hope they will fix this in 17.4.1

This absolutely happened to me too. 13 mini, updated to iOS17.4 killed my cellular with verizon. I was on the phone with them for almost 2 hours, they finally sent me a replacement mini- basically telling me that the new update some how fried my ability to accept eSim. We tried everything, looking at this thread- I feel fortunate that they were willing to send me a replacement phone (considering I don't have phone insurance). I received my phone today and low and behold, I have to update it to the newest iOS before I can set it up... crossing my fingers it actually works. This is a serious iOS problem- I can't believe this has been going on since at least December.

I fixed it by activating WiFi calling. For now I can make and receive calls within my home. Not sure if I will be able to do this outside my home once I connect to cellular. There are also other issues, like known callers to my phone no longer show the caller ID. Also when I call known callers they don’t see my caller id either, only my phone number. For now, I will call important contacts and advise them of the problem. Texting seems to be working ok. Gotta go to work, so I will need to research this further later

Hey everyone, if you’re having problems with your iPhone after the 17.4 update. You can switch your phone to Beta mode. An app comes up for feedback for people that participate in Beta. Here’s where you can send them directly what’s going on with your phone. Along with the ability for them to download your analytics and actually examine the health of your phone, any bugs etc. you don’t have to participate in Beta or continue to be a Beta participant. I just switched sent my complaint and phone stats, and switched back. Easy as pie.

I have the same problem as you but with some differences:

  • No popups shown.
  • Can't select carrier because Settings doesn't show the option when the issue arises.
  • During the issue, the iPhone started getting very warm.
  • Sometimes, when doing nothing, system crashed and restarted.

Steps done when trying to acheive a solution:

  1. Restarting. Cellular signal went from 3 bar to no signal in minutes. In the same place with the same SIM in another phone (iPhone Xr) the signal is between 1 and 3 bar without signal loss.
  2. Reseting network settings. Worked 30 minutes until the problem started again. After restarting, worked for 2 hours until the repeating of the same issue.
  3. Contacted with carrier and requested replacement of SIM card. No improvement nor solution. The SIM card is not the point of failure because now it's a new card and it worked on iPhone Xr with iOS 17.2.
  4. At Genius Bar, they told me to do a full reset. I've done that and the problem persists.

Device affected: iPhone 13

OS: iOS 17.4

I'm going to try another solution and, if the problem persists, I'm going again to an Apple store for solutions.

Best regards.

iOS auto updates are setup on my iPhone 13 Pro. I was using Google maps while driving and all of a sudden, I started receiving a pop up on my iPhone -  “No Sim Available”. Moments later I lost internet connection. Noted that a new iOS 17.4.1 version was auto installed. Came back home and realized I lost my Cellular data. Instead of displaying the network icon/bars on the top right of my iPhone, I saw a display “SOS” for the first time ever. I wasn’t sure if I would lose anything by resetting my Network Settings (simple steps explained in the link below). I was hoping Apple will quickly supply an iOS update since so many people all over are complaining about similar issues with 17.4.1. Finally, I took the courage and reset my Network Settings. Voila! After over 24 hours of of a practically dead iPhone with no incoming calls and not able to make any calls, I’m able to receive calls and make phone calls.

While typing this message, I once again started receiving messages - No sim available. My network connection was once again lost. I reset my Network Settings again and it’s working, for now.

This is not a Bug but a total failure. The very purpose of using a phone is to make calls and receive calls. I’m surprised Apple released an iOS update without thoroughly testing it. Hopefully Apple will release a fix quickly with an iOS update.

I've tried doing a full reset through Mac without restoring any backup. Now the first time configuration enters in a loop indicating that I have parcial configuration and recommending to reset the device again. Done that, and showed the same thing after the second full reset.

No positive results after that. I have the same issues.

Tomorrow I'm going to an Apple Store asking for a solution because my device has less than one year of use and now it's unusable. I've bought a phone and I need a working one.

I updated my IPhone 13 to IOS 17.4 yesterday and it was fine until today. Phone keeps randoms restarting itself and I got the Cellular error message. Contacted Apple support and proceeded to Restart the phone, reset network, check for update, (not sure why but they wanted me to) Connect to a computer and put my phone in recovery mode and reinstall the 17.4 update. And still same issue. WiFi works fine but cellular data is just a wave searching for signal. Now I have to go to an Apple certified tech tomorrow and see if there is anything they can do. The phone is still under warranty so any charges should be free. Bottom line DONT INSTALL 17.4.

The problem is AT&T. They have "towers down" all over the country...but they are refusing to "announce" it. I have been having problem in 2 locations - Los Angeles metro and Austin, TX metro. Have had mobile service with AT&T working fine in both locations for 15+ years...now after 20 customer care calls and 5 escalations to the "highest highest engineering support" they still have not been able to fix the problem and they verbally acknowledge the following 2 things: 1) AT&T network software does not work with iOS 17.4, and 2) AT&T is experiencing massive tower "outages" in large metro areas, including LA, Dallas, Houston, Austin, etc.
