Issues connecting to cellular data on iPhone After Update

Today I updated my iPhone form iOS 16.0 to 17.4. When I opened my phone I found that I was no longer connected to my cellular data. When my wifi is off and my cellular is on, I get popups saying “Cellular Data is Turned Off.” I also keep getting popups to update my carrier settings but when I click update it shows me the popup a second time. Then, it appears again a few minutes later. Something to note is that I am currently on roaming since I am out of my home country.

So far I’ve tried:

  1. restarting my phone
  2. resetting network settings
  3. deleting any vpns in settings
  4. updating my carrier in settings (this did not appear)
  5. manually setting my provider since i’m on roaming
  6. contacting tmobile support (they said ask apple)

Any idea what I could do to fix this issue? Haven’t found anyone on here with the same problem.

Today I found my network just stopped working. No message, no warning - just no cellular network. Come on Apple - how can an IOS update lose focus of the very basic needs of a mobile phone…. No excuse. Please sort this out asap. It had a massive impact on my work day! 🤯

iOS auto updates are setup on my iPhone 13 Pro. I was using Google maps while driving and all of a sudden, I started receiving a pop up on my iPhone -  “No Sim Available”. Moments later I lost internet connection. Noted that a new iOS 17.4.1 version was auto installed. Came back home and realized I lost my Cellular data. Instead of displaying the network icon/bars on the top right of my iPhone, I saw a display “SOS” for the first time ever. I wasn’t sure if I would lose anything by resetting my Network Settings (simple steps explained in the link below). I was hoping Apple will quickly supply an iOS update since so many people all over are complaining about similar issues with 17.4.1. Finally, I took the courage and reset my Network Settings. Voila! After over 24 hours of of a practically dead iPhone with no incoming calls and not able to make any calls, I’m able to receive calls and make phone calls.

While typing this message, I once again started receiving messages - No sim available. My network connection was once again lost. I reset my Network Settings again and it’s working, for now.

This is not a Bug but a total failure. The very purpose of using a phone is to make calls and receive calls. I’m surprised Apple released an iOS update without thoroughly testing it. Hopefully Apple will release a fix quickly with an iOS update.

Hopefully your issue’s resolved by now but just wanted to share my story- Sat morning 16yr old son’s phone has “no bars”. After an hour back and forth and finally getting access to his phone, I realize even though no SIM errors, and cellular data switched on, messages and receive at his phone number….there was no cellular network getting through. No phone calls or messages even though settings all correct. Later on my son told me that his phone updated to 17.4.1 overnight.

after 2 hours on phone with Verizon, trying 2 different physical SIM cards and an eSIM, Verizon decided to send me a replacement phone(since I have the protection plan. New phone came, same thing. Could not activate the phone number. Ba k on the phone with Verizon and after several resets, in and out with the SIM card, I was sent an eSIM which finally worked. But only after I removed the physical sim and did another reset. At one point I had an eSIM and physical sim so like an IMEI 1 and IMEI2. The phone didn’t like that. Had to delete the ESIM, then removed be the physical sim, then download new eSIM. Now it works.

im not doing this iOS update till they get it fixed. My son gets my text messages now because t no more blue text boxes, only green.

Hey everyone. Just had the exact same problem yesterday after refreshing to IOS 17.4.1. Drove me crazy after trying everything and nothing has helped. BUT! I saved all my stuff to my ICloud and basically erased my IPhone. Then I started setting up everything from the beginning, just when you buy a new one and after all my apps, photos etc was back to normal my cellular data was working again! Don’t know if this helps but is worth a try!

I updated my iPhone too and had the exact same issues. I had no trouble in calls or messages but my cellular data was completely off. I tried many things; including turning on and off the airplane mode, resetting APN settings, contacting my operator, vodafone, and had them reset my network settings. I was considering changing my sim card or switching to another operator but before that, i backed up all my data to iCloud and rebooted my phone. No data went missing and the issue was resolved. So, the only thing that worked for me was rebooting and it took me approximately two hours to do the whole thing.

I’ve also had the same issue, I updated my phone last Wednesday and my number (calling and texting) and data hasn’t worked since. When I pull up the cellular settings, and under “Send & Receive” my number has a loading symbol next to it but my email works fine. I’ve tried turning off and on just about every setting in my phone. I’ve restarted it about 6 times. I have also been contacting Apple about this issue and they don’t even know what’s wrong with it.

9to5Mac reported (a few weeks ago) that Apple released a new version of 17.4.1, but it was only available through a computer.

On a Mac, plug the phone into the computer, open a Finder window, and select your iPhone in the side bar. If the side panel isn't showing, go to the View menu and click Show Side Bar. On older Macs you may have to use iTunes, but it is similar. On a Windows computer I believe you either open iTunes or the Apple Devices app, but I'm not familiar with that setup.

Anyway, once you have done that, there should be a "page" for your phone. Choose General from the top row, and there will be a Check for Update button. From there you should be able to update your phone the newer version of 17.4.1.

I updated "over the air" to 17.4.1 and didn't see any problems. But when I saw the article I updated again and my phone went through the whole process over again, which seems to indicate that this is a different update. Since then it has worked fine, as far as I can see. No guarantees, but several people in other threads have said this helped them.

9to5Mac reports that the build number for the over-the-air update is 21E236, but the one through a computer is 21E237.

I've been having the same issue ever since I updated to ios17.4. My home internet connection doesn't even work, I've tried to forget the network and reconnect and it's now telling me that the password is wrong and that I have no internet. 2 other people in my house and they're connected fine(they haven't updated yet)

Glad I just found this thread. I had a genius diagnose mine in store and the only thing damaged was the sim port. ATT tried different SIM cards and a virtual SIM card earlier in the day with no success. Apple genius admitted that it was them but told me it was $500 to repair it.

This isn’t a warranty issue, it’s a property damage issue.

It turns out none of the support staff or even senior support advisors online at apple nor in store managers have contact info for them. I’m told their attorneys will only speak to other attorneys.

Since I need the hotspot to connect to equipment at work and the cost to repair it in store was the same or more than trading in my inoperable phone to ATT to get a new one, it made sense at the time to take the most affordable and fastest route since I now lost time at work for that day. Only later did I think back that it was completely wrong I had to pay for someone else damaging my phone, who also admitted to it and showed me the evidence. Apple needs to be held responsible and cannot hide their lawyers. I found the local apple registered agent’s contact info and they’ll be receiving a letter from me soon.

I have had the same problem (iPhone 14 pro), after the last update. Hard/soft resets make no difference. I thought it might be related to WiFi locking out the mobile data signal even though 4g/5g signal was always showing. Swiping down to turn off the WiFi made no difference to the mobile service, it still didn’t work. However, GOING TO SETTINGS AND DESELECTING WiFi did. This might be the answer until Apple release a fix - hopefully shortly.
