How to prevent music library re-downloading when syncing Apple devices with macOS Monterey

I have recently upgraded from an iMac running OS High Sierra to an iMac running OS Monterey.

Now when I sync my iPhone 12, my iPad and my iPod with the newer desktop my entire music library is downloaded and synched to the devices all over again, every time. This is taking up a lot of time and seems unnecessary.

With my older computer the music library was only synched and updated to my devices if I had made changes or additions.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can stop it?

I'm having the same problem with a MacBook Pro running Catalina. As soon as I plug the iPhone into the Mac's USB port, the transfer of my Mac's entire music library onto my iPhone begins automatically. Even the option to disable syncing is shaded. I can only helplessly watch the eternal progress bar creep to an eventual halt as my devices attempt to cram 59GB of music onto a 64GB iPhone. Is this a bug? Any advice out there?
