Tick/check song option not working on iTunes/Mac

I have a number of songs/albums that I do not wish to show in my iPod (Christmas ones mainly) - so I utilised the check/tick option, and deselected those songs I did not wish to appear on my iPod. However, they keep appearing.

In my Settings for iTunes, I have ticked the 'songs list tickboxes' option - should I deselect this? There is also a further one in sync settings that I have deselected - something like only sync songs that are ticked/checked.

Any idea on what I might be doing wrong?
